The living room was one of the rooms that was in the best shape. Despite that, however, electrical upgrades and the difficulty of painting the heavily textured walls kept us busy in here. In addition, all the lighting fixtures, including the wall sconces on either side of the chimney, had been removed. In the end, this worked out for the better as we had already purchased a chandelier a year ago which turned out to be perfect for this room. The wall sconces had more modern wiring including a grounding wire which is lacking in most old fixtures. One of our proudest moments when the electricians pointed to the sconces and told us we could get new ones at Lowe's when in fact those were the new ones from Lowe's! That tells us that they really fit the character of the house!
The floors in this room are the old linoleum tiles. This was the only room that had the checkerboard patterned tiles that were in good enough condition to polish and keep in place.
All the electrical wiring in the living room had to be replaced. Opting not to go with the electrician's suggestion of running exposed wire molding all over the living room, we had to remove all the baseboard woodwork and chisel out a groove in the concrete so the wiring could be hidden behind the wood.
