The history of this Dodge Charger begins
on July 31, 1972 at the Lynch Road assembly plan in Michigan. It
was the 131st of 41,157 Charger 2 Door Hardtops produced. It was
sold as a "high" price range car, and had the 318 2 bbl. motor. Its
options included air conditioning and heating, and tinted glass all around.
It was painted bright blue metallic (GB5). (See the fender
tag page for all of its original equipment...) Since then, this car
has changed a lot.
Unfortunately, I do not have the records from past
owners of this car. The trail runs cold after the previous owner,
because the DMV would not give us information on owners prior to him. But,
I can tell you a little about the car in the previous owner's possession.
The car had been owned by a man, whose name I will not disclose for
privacy, and was driven by his son, a high school student. He purchased
the car in January of 1996, and at the time, it had 66,138 miles on it. After
purchasing it, he and his son began making some drastic changes to the car.
The records are hard to follow, because this owner has receipts for
work on the car in his name before the previous title says he owned it.
Anyway, since I can't straighten it out right now, here's all the
stuff that's been done:
September 1994:
360 high performance motor purchased.
October 1994:
Removed original 318 engine, and installed 360 engine
and all other necessary parts, installed new valve seals and timing cover,
new radio and 4 speakers, new lower ball joints, lower control arms, pitman
arm, and bushings, changed grease in the differential, new K-frame bushings,
new choke, new oil pan, installed rebuilt torque convertor, new choke cable,
used wiper linkage and new bushings, belts, spark plugs, and new fuel pump.
This was obviously a major repair, and judging from
the amount of work done, the car must have been in bad shape.
December 1995:
Installed headers, new bulbs all around, lowered
1/2 inch with torsion bars, and installed a new thermostat.
February 1996:
Removed headers in favor of manifolds, new plug wires,
new power valve in carb, new accelerator pump.
September 1999:
A tree branch fell through the windshield, thankfully
not damaging the roof struts. The windshield was replaced.
________ 2000?:
R&R water pump installed, ride height re-adjusted,
and it is noted that the transmission leaked.
October 2000:
New alternator, voltage regulator, heater now needs
to be turned on from the engine compartment, and a broken drivers door hinge
and drivers door window are replaced.
________ ?????
At some point the owner painted over the original
bright blue metallic paint, in favor of dark blue metallic with white racing
stripes.
Then the car came into my possession on September 23, 2001. Here
is the work I have put in since owning it:
October 2001:
New Holley Street Avenger carb., new steering box,
new leaf springs, repaired wiper linkage, and repaired signal wiring to
the hood and side signals.
November 2001:
Accident with a Toyota Echo. The Echo hit the
back of the car causing minimal damage to the Charger (bent an exhaust tip)
and totaling itself. Just goes to show how sturdy old cars are. Too
bad she hit my bumper guards right in her crumple zone. But then
again, too bad she was speeding and not paying attention too. At least
it didn't cause the Charger much damage,
March 2002:
New intake manifold, freeze plugs, and pressure test
on heads for leaks.
August 2002:
Front end and brake job. Complete front end
overhaul, new rotors, drums, wheel bearings, pads, shoes, calipers, gas
shocks, brake cables, and a used wiper linkage i pulled off a '73 Charger
SE in a scrap yard. The old linkage had broken completely through,
as it had been badly rusted and then repaired.
October 2002:
Complete re-wiring. New front wiring harness,
ignition switch, turn signal switch, bulbs, and related parts.
January 2003:
Oil pressure problem diagnosed. Culprit is
possibly the main bearings or oil pump.
June 2003:
New belts, and tentatively, a new oil pump...
July 2003:
New horn, turn signals fixed (were grounded to painted
surfaces), tune-up in prep for races.
July 9, 2003:
Original Broadcast sheet found under the back seat.
Decoding process begins.
July 16, 2003:
Raced at MIR's War On Wheels (WOW). Best time:
17.64 seconds. Adjusted throttle linkage housing, and transmission
kickdown linkage. Transmission runs to top of RPM range in every gear.
Diagnosis: cannot handle the 360's power. Hopefully will swap
to 727 w/3.55 gears.
October 20, 2006:
Boy, it's been a long time... the car has been garaged since late 2003, as I have been unable to transport it to my current location. It is driven every couple of weeks to keep the juices flowing, but is in need of a serious tune-up and some repairs as noted in previous posts; As soon as the necessary funds and a garage become available, I'm planning on starting these, as well as major body work, as early as next summer. If all works out as planned I'll have this car back out on the street soon. I can't wait.
