Cuddyer called back

OAKLAND -- Michael Cuddyer wasn't sure he could celebrate a return to the majors. Did he arrive in time to make the playoff roster or would he spend September on strike?

"I didn't know what had happened when I got on the plane [Friday morning]," Cuddyer said. "I'm glad it worked out and I'm on the roster."

There is no strike, and Cuddyer was called up Friday in time to be added to the postseason roster. The list is due in to the league office today. Cuddyer, who can play in the outfield, first base and third base, was batting .309 at Class AAA Edmonton with 20 homers and 53 RBI in 86 games. He batted .196 over 20 games in an earlier stint with the Twins.

The Twins now have 14 position players and 11 pitchers on their roster, which will be the arrangement they'll use in October. They entered Friday with their magic number to clinch the A.L. Central Division down to 13.

Clubs are allowed to add players on the disabled list to the playoff roster, which will give the Twins time to figure out who makes their staff. Technically, lefthanders Mike Duvall (elbow), Jose Rodriguez (elbow) and Eric Milton (left knee) and righthander Jack Cressend (shoulder) could be added.

Realistically, Milton will be the only one added, as he will be activated on Monday. But it gives manager Ron Gardenhire time to evaluate his bullpen.

"We still have some time," Gardenhire said. "We don't have to make that decision for a long time, and that gives use a whole extra month to decide on our 11 pitchers."

Teams can only replace pitchers with other pitchers, position players with other position players.
