What are the repercussions of leprosy if left untreated?
|
Leprosy can cause serious damage to the peripheral nervous system.
Without treatment, leprosy causes "progressive and permanent damage to skin, nerves, limbs and eyes.” Losses of fingers, toes, and blindness can ensue if no steps are taken to curb the disease. Leprosy can cause loss of feeling in the extremities, making it easy to badly damage arms and legs, fingers and toes. It can also cause some muscles to stop functioning. This can result in disorders such as “dropped wrist”, “dropped foot”, “clawed hand”, and "Lagophthalmos", an ailment in which the eyes can’t close due to paralysis. Leprosy has very serious repercussions.
