US 240  Decommissioned
Previous US 240's: US 240: May have had a brief excursion into Virginia. 1934 Conoco Map shows US 240 crossing the Potomac using Arlington Memorial Bridge to Columbia Island, then heading south to US 1-50-Mt. Vernon Hwy. As now, Columbia Island was part of Washington DC. So US 240 ran about 1/4 mile in Virginia. The 1933 Conoco Map shows this as no number. The 1932 and 1933 Official Maps imply a primary route went like that, but does not label its number. The official maps I have for 1937, 1938, and 1941 do not identify US 240 in Virginia. However, the 1939 Esso map shows the same as the 1934 Conoco; the 1941 Esso map shows US 240 Bypass on this stretch, and implies US 240 went further north and used the Key Bridge to cross the Potomac, adding another mile or so of Virginia territory. The 1944 official map shows US 240 using 35th St. in DC down to Key Bridge, but does not show US 240 on the Virginia side of the Potomac. The 1947 Official Map shows the 35th St. routing to be unnumbered.

Creation: US 340 is an original US route which appeared in Virginia in 1927. It originally began at US 50 (curr SR 723) Millwood and headed north through Berrysville to WV. This was previously VA 361 and a piece of VA 37. Note that in the beginning US 340 did not slide through Loudon County near Harpers Ferry WV as it does now.
Adjustments: In July 1933, US 340 was rerouted to end at US 50 (curr 723) in Boyce, replacing a sliver of original VA 54. The old route became VA 255.
Between 1935-37, US 340 was rerouted to go west from Berryville along VA 7 to US 11 Winchester. The route from Berryville to Boyce became VA 12.
In 1950, US 340 was rerouted to pass into Loudon County so that US 340 went WV-VA-MD over the recently constructed bridges over the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers, which had a brief life as part of VA 275 and VA 275Y.
Between 1954-55, US 340 was rerouted at Berryville again to head south and assume its current routing. Berryville to Winchester became US 340 ALT and VA 7 (just VA 7 today). Berryville to Greenville was a complete replacement of the most recent VA 12. In the mid 30's this had been a very long VA 340 route extension.
Posting: Fully posted; Cutouts remain in Front Royal and north of Waynesboro
Comment: An often overlooked road in the shadow of Skyline Drive and I-81.  Loudoun Co. portion less than a mile long; includes a single intersection with CR 671.   The rest runs down the Shenandoah Valley between Skyline Drive and Massanutten Mountain.  The 1972 and 1973 Official Maps shows US 340 Bus as it is today, but after that the Bypass is shown as SR 615 until 1992.
US 340 ALT  Decommissioned
Previous US 340 ALT's: US 340 ALT: Appeared between 1955-56. Ran from US 340, VA 7 EB Berryville to Winchester, then south to US 340, VA 277, US 522 SB Double Tollgate. Berryville to Winchester had been the alignment of US 340. Entire route was multiplex with VA 7 or US 522. US 340 ALT was dropped in October 1962 (CTB Minutes)
