David "Joe" Mooney NEWPORT NEWS - David "Joe" Mooney, 55, died suddenly Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2001, and went to be with his Lord and Savior. He was the son of the late Ernest Joe and Ethel Mae Mooney. He resided for most of his life in Newport News, but had made his home in York County for the last 15 years. Mr. Mooney was a member of Seaford Baptist Church and formerly a member of Calvary Baptist Church, where he was baptized. He was a 1965 graduate of Newport News High School, where he excelled in all sports. He played on the Newport News varsity basketball team when it won state championship in 1964. He was co-captain of the basketball team in his senior year. He got his associates degree in business from Thomas Nelson Community College. He was employed at Anheuser Busch for more than 25 years where he was a devoted worker and a daily witness for the Lord. Joe is survived by his wife, Shari. They have been married for 28 wonderful years. Other survivors are his brother, Jimmy and his wife, Patsy, of Marietta, Ga.; nephews, Tim Mooney and his wife, Darcy, and Jamie Mooney and his wife, Sally; mother-in-law, Jewell "Mom" Wells; nieces, Debbie, Kathy, and Donna who are the daughters of his brother, Johnny, who preceded him in death; other special relatives are Dave Wells, John and Bonita Wells, Dan Wells, Chuck and Donna Howard, Brian and Jeff Wells, and Lauren and Christie Howard. A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. today at Peninsula Funeral Home by Dr. Richard Harrell of Seaford Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park.

I am still as shocked and saddened by this news as when I first heard it. Joe was one of the nicest people I ever met, in the fullest sense of that word. I can honestly say I never heard anyone say anything negative about him. He was unfailingly friendly, cheerful, helpful, and smiling. | |||||||

When I read the news of Joe's death the first picture that came to my mind was his ever-present smile. He had such a wonderful personality. I'm proud to have known him in high school. Thanks to his Heavenly Father he lives on in a better place. |

Joe, I am going to miss you buddy. I remember your grinning face, light but good hearted disposition, double dating to the '65 Hampton Prom, discount clothing at Leggett's, the old "Smith/Murphy" routine, just lot's of good times and memories and especially your loving Mom and Dad. I knew Joe only briefly at NNHS, but I remember him as a very friendly person, and quick with a smile and a "hello". He seemed to be the type of guy you could depend on no matter what. God bless the family. |

Carol: I certainly appreciate your taking the time to notify each of us regarding the loss of Joe Mooney. As you know, I just recently located Joe's home address, but his phone was unlisted. I will be visiting the Tidewater area in early December, so I decided that I would contact Joe by mail once my plans were set in stone and schedule a visit with him. Well, now it's too late, and another friend has passed without my telling him what his friendship meant to me. The moral to this story is that if you have something nice to say to someone, don't wait. Life is too short and the future unknown. It takes just one precious moment to tell a friend or loved one that you care or that they made a difference in your life. Don't miss that opportunity.
