Stephen Sparkman

NEWPORT NEWS - Stephen Payne Sparkman, age 55, died at home in Newport News on Feb. 4, 1999.

   A native of Newport News, he was the son of the late Thomas Costello Sparkman, Chief of the Newport News Fire Department, and Frances Brooks Sparkman.

   He graduated from Newport News High School in 1963.  He attended Southwood College and graduated from East Tennessee State University in 1968 with a B.S. in business.  He operated the Sparkman Insurance Group from which he retired in 1996.

   He is survived by his wife, Eileen Casey Sparkman of Newport News; a son, Stephen Payne Sparkman II and his wife, Anne Wimbrow Sparkman of Charleston, S.C.; his daughter, Stacey Brooks Sparkman of Richmond, Va.; and an aunt, Pauline Swanson Hunt of Hampton.

  A lifelong sailing and fishing enthusiast, Steve was an active member of the Hampton Yacht Club.

   Visitation will be at Peninsula Funeral Home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 7.  Service will be conducted by the Rev. William Lockwood at Peninsula Funeral Home on Monday, Feb. 8, at 11 a.m.  Graveside service to follow at Peninsula Memorial Park in Newport News.
