Nancy U. Garrett
NEWPORT NEWS
Nancy Umphlet Garrett, 53, died Monday, Aug. 28, 2000, from metastatic breast cancer.
A Newport News native, she was the daughter of the late Huntley and Myrtle Umphlet.
Nancy was a 1965 graduate of Newport News High School, an honor that she carried
throughout her adult life. Her greatest achievement and satisfaction was in the nurture and
care of her devoted family, a mirror image of the attractive way that she cared for herself
and her household. A consummate cook and gracious hostess, dining was an event
shared frequently with many friends and family. During her lengthy illness, she remained
an inspiration to her family and to all who knew her. Throughout her life, Nancy was active
and nourished her children in the church and was a loyal and capable choir and bell-choir
member. She was an invaluable partner in the family business, Garrett's Glass.
She is survived by her husband of 35 years, John E. Garrett; her son and beloved
daughter-in-law, John Christopher and Christine Garrett (Chris and Chris); her daughter,
Jean Kristin Garrett; one grandson, David Christopher Garrett, all of Newport News; a
sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Henry Kennedy of Hampton; and a large extended
family.
A service of celebration and victory will be held at 6:30 p.m. today, Aug. 30, at First United
Methodist Church, Main Street and Warwick Boulevard, Newport News, with the Rev. John
LeGault officiating. Visitation with the family and a reception in honor of the guests will
follow the service at the church. At other times, the family will be at the residence. Burial
will be at 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 31, in Peninsula Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers,
memorial contributions are suggested to First United Methodist Church, 10246 Warwick
Blvd., Newport News, VA 23601, where contributions will be split between the Music Fund
and the Cancer Relay for Life.
Peninsula Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
