A Huntsman and Dogs

This painting was completed by Winslow Homer with oil paints on canvas in 1891. Homer did not participate in the academic training in Paris, but enjoyed hunting and fishing. His paintings consisted of this natural lanscape, which made his paintings famous. In this painting everything but the hunter and the dogs are dead because it is autumn, but yet the hunter has a association with the silent landscape.

Dragon Jar

This Dragon Jar was made in Korea during the Choson Dynasty between 1892 and 1910. The pot is made out of porcelain clay with a cobalt underglaze to decorate the dragons who's bodies are curving around the contours of the pot. In Korea at this time dragons were creatures that held a symbol of authority just like a ruler did.

Mademoiselle Yvonne Landsberg

This painting was completed by Henri Matisse in 1914. This is one of the most mysterious paintings in the 20th Century. The lines Matisse used around the figure in his painting made the relationship between the young woman and a budding flower. These lines create an energy of beauty and feeling in which the painting can't contain.

The Birth of Venus

The Birth of Venus was completed by Nicolas Poussin around 1635 or 1636. The subject of this painting is questionable because was it the birth of Venus or her triumph? This question proves that Poussin felt free to invent multiple meanings or ambiguities to the painting.
