Lady Banks

Class: Species (Rosa banksia)
Height: climber to 20' or more
Hardiness:zones 6-10
Description: Double, spring flowering, yellow, fragrant, thornless.

Comments: We added this rose to the garden in April 2002. Since Larry Daniels was not making much progress onto our arch, we planted Lady Banks next to him in Rose Bed Four. I've read many reports that this rose is only marginally hardy here but I know of many established plants of both the white and yellow banksia growing in the area and I have not had any die back on my plant so far.

It is one of the earliest plants to bloom in the garden and has a light, sweet fragrance that carries on the air but is not so strong when you burry your nose in the clusters of small blossoms.

The leaves are light in color and long, reminding me more of bamboo than a rose. It has shown no signs of disease. Another plus for adding this rose to an arbor is that it is thornless so you don't have to worry so much when it wanders into the walkway. Further south, you see this rose everywhere clambering up trees with wisteria. Lady Banks on our gate
