Class: Bourbon Height: 8-12' Width: 5' Hardiness: to zone 5 Bred: Garcon, France, 1881 Description: Fragrant, deep pink, repeat flowering, very double. This rose can be trained as a climber or pegged. Comments: I have three plants of this rose, one inRose Bed One, trained on an arch, one in Rose Bed Six, trained up a pillar, and one in the North Lawn, planted against the neighbor's white wooden fence.
The reason I have so many plants, is that the first own root plant I had showed signs of mosaic virus when I grew it in a pot in 1999. I bought another plant, this one grafted, and a friend gave me another which he grew from a cutting. All three plants are doing well and I have not seen any further signs of mosaic virus. I assume this is because they are not as stressed as the first one was during it's days in a pot. I'm not even sure now which plant was the mosaic one. Mme. I. P. gets a little blackspot in my organic garden. It has a dramatic spring flush, a good fall bloom, and a few intermittent flowers in between, but nothing like that first spring bloom. The petals of the flowers spiral around the center neatly and beautifully. This is among the most fragrant of my roses. Despite it's bad reputation as a blackspot magnet, which I think is over exaggerated, I can not imagine not having this rose in my garden. It is definitely one of my favorites.
