Gertrude Jekyll bush

Class: Portland
Height: 3' Width: 2' Bred:found rose

Description: Double, repeat flowering, fuschia, fragrant.

Comments: I was not terribly impressed with this rose at first, but it has definately improved with age. Planted in Rose Bed Three during the Fall of 2000, it did not produce a lot of blooms or new growth until the Spring of 2002. It is still a very mannerly 3.5 feet, but bears lots of flowers. It has been fairly disease resistant in my organic garden.

This rose has very "high shoulders", meaning that the foliage grows very close to the blossom, sometimes covering blossoms lower on the plant. For me, this is a great reason to cut the lower flowers for bouquets. The stiff stems are great for cutting and the flowers hold up well in the vase and are very fragrant.
