Sombreuil

Class: Tea
Height: 8' Width: 5'
Bred: Robert, France, 1850

Description: Fragrant, white, repeat flowering, very double.

Comments: This own root was planted in our previous garden in Spring 1999, then dug up and potted to move the following Spring. Fall 2000, it was planted inRose Bed Five, to be trained as a pillar rose.

There is a great deal of speculation about the history of this rose. Many people believe that what is sold as Sombreuil in the US is actually Colonial White. Regardless of who this rose really is, it is a beautiful plant. The pure white petals radiate around the green button eye. The plant has been disease free in my garden with no spraying.

The story behind the name Sombreuil is a very darkly mysterious one. It is said to be named after a French woman whose father was accused of being an aristocrat during the French revolution. In order to save her father's life and convince the revolutionaries that he was not an aristocrat, she drank the blood of an aristocrat.
