Just for Becky

The phone vibrated in her pocket as she sat in the middle of her kitchen. Pulling it out, she saw that it was a text message.

How r u this AM?

It was her sister checking up on her.

Three days earlier, Hurricane Katrina had been nothing more than a tropical storm off the coast of Florida and she had told her sister that she was ready for the rain to come but as the storm had cleared the Bahamas, it had been upgraded to a hurricane predicted to slam into the east coast of Florida…namely, Miami.  Becky had been prepared for the minimal hurricane buying plenty of canned food, bottled water, batteries, and gas for the generator. Her freezer was already stocked with stuff she could cook on the gas grill.  She’d even managed to get the hurricane shutters up on her newly renovated house without any problem.  She had NOT been prepared for what was in front of her now.

Just fuckin’ peachy!!  L was her response as tears stung her eyes.

As she read the message, Nikki frowned.

“What’s wrong, baby?” asked Howie as he looked over his girlfriend’s shoulder.

“Becky….something’s wrong.  How much longer before we get there?”

“Depends on the damage,” growled Kevin as he turned on yet another detour just a block from Becky’s house.  “Find out what’s wrong.”

What’s wrong?

Becky laughed a hysterical laugh as she looked at the message.  Where to begin?

BAD AM.   No sleep…too hot. Lost everything in freezer & refrig. Tryin’ to clean up now.

Nikki relayed the message and Kevin asked, “I thought she had a generator.”

“She does but evidently something happened.”

Howie said, “Tell her we’re on the way to help.”

Smiling as she wrote the next message, she said, “No, I want that to be a surprise.  I know what to do.”

Chin up!  Think about Kev helping u!

Oh god!  To have Kevin here right now would definitely make everything perfect but that wasn’t going to happen.  Kevin and the guys along with Nikki were in the middle of the tour.  In fact, they had just played Phoenix the night before and were headed to Vegas for a show tomorrow night.

*sigh* I wish.

“Oh is SHE in for a surprise!” laughed Nikki as she showed Howie the message she was writing.

Just imagine his bare arms flexing as he wipes out the shelves.

That was definitely the image she needed.  Leave it to her sister to know how to make her feel better.

OMFG!  I luv u!  Gotta go so I can get started.

“FINALLY!” huffed Kevin as he pulled up in front of Becky’s house and putting the rental truck in park.  “Let’s go.”

As she started to pull the contents of her refrigerator out and drop it into the trash can, Becky heard the knock at the front door.  “I certainly hope it’s the power company coming to tell me I’ll have power soon,” she said to the cat as she went to answer it.

Opening the door, Becky’s eyes grew to the size of saucers seeing Nikki, Howie, and Kevin standing there.

“Hey, sis!” greeted the younger girl.  “Need some help?”

“OH MY GOD!” squealed Becky as she hugged Nikki.  “How on earth did you get here and WHY are you here?”

“We flew into Orlando after the show last night and drove down here.” Pulling back, Nikki said, “I got worried about you when I heard that the eye came over your neighborhood so I decided to come check on you.  Howie and Kevin decided to come along too.  Sounds like it’s a good thing too.  What happened to the generator?”

“I have NO clue!!  I gassed it up and tried to start it but NOTHING.”

“Welp…from the sounds of it,” drawled Kevin as he watched Becky, “we’ve got a lot of work to do.”

Becky looked up at the gorgeous man who had stolen her heart.  They had dated occasionally ever since Howie and Nikki had introduced them three years ago when Kevin had appeared on Broadway but nothing serious, much to her dismay.  Now, his emerald eyes seemed to be undressing her and she felt her knees go weak.

“Tell you what.  Nikki and I will go find a new generator and shop for some food,” offered Howie.  “Kevin can stay here and help you clean, Bec.”

“Works for me.  When you find one, get it big enough to run the whole house,” said Kevin handing Howie the keys to the truck.  “See you two later.”

Nikki gave her sister a hug and whispered, “Bare arms, flexing!”

Crimson rose in her cheeks, “GO!”

Laughing, Nikki took Howie’s hand and the two headed out in search of a generator and food.
