Anti-immigration rally turns violent
Los Angeles Veterans Affairs Police
On July 4, 2000 the WLA-VA Police Special Response Team was placed on stand-by for possible unrest that might occur during an anti-immigration rally at the U.S. Federal Building on Wilshire Blvd. The U.S. Veterans Affairs property line is just north of the Federal Building. Wilshire Blvd which is a major street separates both property lines. The Federal Building is patrolled by the Federal Protective Service Police. VA Police SRT Officers in full riot gear staged just inside of the West Los Angeles VA property. During the incident which lasted only minutes, the VA Police SRT Officers deployed onto Wilshire Blvd for the protection of several by-standers and FPS police officers that were injuried during the unrest. (Frozen soda cans were thrown at the opposing crowd by protestors and hitting several people on the head.) VA Police quickly restored order by establishing a command presence which resulted in all protestors returning back to the sidewalks without further incident. The VA police and the FPS Police had the largest police forces on scene. Local police agencies had observers on scene only. Los Angeles County Sheriff units were notified, which arrived and took control of the scene. VA Police SRT Officers redeployed back to the staging area.
