Part 28

Angel and Cordelia made there way through town unnoticed. Strange, when you were hiding you almost always got caught but right out in the open and they were ignored. Not even a fledgling had bothered them. They decided that perhaps they should just go to Willy's. If they were going to be noticed at all that was the most likely place.

Willy paled visibly when he saw the couple walk into his bar. There was something off about the two of them. He didn't take the time to study them, instead slipping into the back room and calling the boss. He hoped what ever was going to happen that he would be left out of it. This kind of trouble he didn't need. Angelus was a scary Vampire no doubt but the boss was absolutely terrifying, and she was human! When the line was finally answered he quickly explained to the woman on the other end what was going on. He was shocked to learn from her that Angel was human. Spike would apparently be coming by with some help very shortly to pick up his 'guests' and he was to keep them there until he arrived. Not looking forward to his part in the upcoming scene he bowed his head in defeat and walked back out into the bar.

Angel watched as Willy slipped into the back room. He turned his head and saw that Cordelia had witnessed his departure as well. They sat at a table in the corner and waited for the inevitable goon squad to come and collect them. Cordelia took out her cell phone and called Gunn. After a brief conversation of where they were and what they expected to happen she hung up. She looked at Angel and smiled. He smiled back at her and took her hand. "If we don't make it..." Cordelia cut him off. "Don't Angel, I mean, tell me after we do make it okay? And I'll tell you as well." They smiled at each other and continued to hold hands. A second later the door opened and Spike walked in followed by at least seven other Vampires.

Spike saw him the moment he walked into the bar. It was weird, seeing the face of his Sire all human. He walked up to the man and looked at him. He could smell the difference right away, he smelled of life instead of death. He saw the way his chest rose and fell with each breath, could hear the beat of his heart deep in his chest. A chest that he would lay his head upon a long time ago while listening to his Sire read to him and Drusilla. It was strange, it disturbed him and yet at the same time he wanted to ask him so many questions. Things like what he thought about modern food, did it taste different now that he was alive, did the night hold any mystery any more or was he now frightened to go out after dark? Did he feel like prey now instead of the predator he once was. Mostly, he wanted to know if he thought it was worth it. Did he regret the loss of immortality, the strength of the demon. Did he regret being made back into a weak, fragile mortal. Instead of asking these things or even speaking to him at all he simply punched him. Once. Angel was out. He then turned on the cheerleader. "Now, I don't have a problem taking you out the same way if you cause trouble. Come along nice like and we can forgo the bruises. Sound like a plan pet?" Cordelia glared at the arrogant Vampire but nodded affirmatively and stood. Spike grabbed her arm and led her toward the door as two of the other Vampires picked up the unconscious Angel and followed behind.

Angelus always had a sixth sense about magic, it was one of the things that made him the master Vampire he had become. Therefore he was aware almost immediately when the spell that was containing them had weakened. He gently removed himself from the Slayer who had fallen asleep in his arms and approached what he assumed was the opening of the cell. He couldn't exactly see through the opening but he could make out some shapes on the other side. he pressed against the barrier and felt it start to give slightly. With any luck between the two of them they could push through. He just had to wake Buffy and hope she was coherent enough to understand and help. He went back to the Slayer and gently shook her from her sleep. Buffy opened her eyes and blinked at him. "Angel?" Angelus frowned. "No, Angelus. Remember? Look. I think I've found a way out but I need your help. Can you trust me?" He didn't know why he needed her to know that it was him and not Angel who was there with her, that it was him who was going to rescue her, him who was holding her while she slept. He didn't know why he needed her to know that. He just knew that it was important.

Buffy woke from a dream where she was safe and loved. She looked up into the eyes of her one time lover and blinked. He was still there. Angel? She asked him. He answered her that it was him, Angelus, not her former beau. He told her about getting out and needing her help. She started to remember everything again. It was always like this when she woke. Confusion, fright, then the remembrance of where she was and what had happened. At least this time there was some hope. Angelus had held her while she cried, soothed her and promised to get her out of this place. Now he was asking her to help, to trust him. She nodded her head and took his outstretched hand. Angelus pulled her to her feet and led her to the barrier that was keeping them in. They pushed against it together and felt it give beneath their combined strength. Within minutes they were out of the cell and in a brightly lit room that held others. Prisoners, just like them. They heard a noise coming from the other side of the door and hid out of the way.

Cordelia had been silent the entire way over. She openly glared at the blonde Vampire that held her arm but said nothing. When he put her in the back of a darkened van with a still unconscious Angel and two Vampires she said nothing, when he dragged her out of the van in some underground parking garage she said nothing. But when he slapped Angel in the face to wake him up, she couldn't hold her tongue any longer. "Hey! Stop that! He's not a damn Vampire anymore. You don't hit him like that." Spike just smirked at her and struck Angel again. The Vampires who were holding Angel looked truly frightened and when Spike turned around to see what they were looking at he saw Cordelia glowing. That was the last thing he saw before passing out.
