Marius de Romanus was born in 30 B.C. in Rome. He was the illegitimate son of a Roman Senator and a Celtic Princess. By the age of twenty, he became a scholar and a chronicler, always observing. He also traveled a lot to many great cities. He also knew Pandora who was then Lydia, when she was a child. He also asked for her hand in marriage but her father denied it. At the age of forty, he was kidnapped by Druids. They selected Marius to be the replacement for their dying God of the Grove. They prepare him for this and Marius becomes acquainted with the Druid priest Mael. When the day of the feast of Samhain arrives they take him to the God of the Grove. This God of the Grove turns out to be an elderly blood drinker burned by the Great Fire. He makes Marius into a vampire and instructs him to go to Egypt to find out the cause of the Great Fire. The Druids send the old God of the Grove into the fire and Marius escapes. There Akasha came to him (even though she and Enkil were already in their slumber-like state) and Marius became the Keeper of Those Who Must Be Kept. He moved to Antioch with Those Who Must Be Kept and made his longtime love Lydia, now Pandora into a vampire. They lived there together, taking care of Those Who Must Be Kept for 200 years. After a fight with Pandora, Marius takes Those Who Must Be Kept to Rome. It was there that he comes across Mael, now a vampire and his maker and companion, Avicus. A few months later, Mael is wounded and Marius gives him his powerful blood. Rome comes under attack from Goths and Scythians and Marius and Avicus seek refuge in the shrine of Those Who Must Be Kept. They stay there for six nights until their thirst drives them out. Marius goes into his first long slumber. Mael and Avicus repeatedly try to awaken him but to no avail. Nearly a century later, he reawakens and goes with them to Constantinople. They meet the blood drinker Eudoxia who wants the Mother for her own. She becomes Akasha’s victim. Marius meets Eudoxia’s companion, Zenobia and he leaves her in the care of Avicus when he goes to the Italian Alps with the Mother and the Father. Circa 1200, Marius goes into a deep slumber again. In the 1300’s, about the time of the Black Death, he reawakens for a night and visits Venice for the first time. Finally in 1482, he wakens and goes to Rome. He meets Santino who wants Marius to be the leader of their coven of The Children of Darkness. He goes to Florence and meets and falls in love with the great painter Botticelli. (Yes, THAT Botticelli, in case you were wondering.) He resists the urge to turn him into a vampire. Marius goes back to Venice and builds a palazzo there. He takes in many apprentices. He meets the beautiful, young courtesan Bianca and gets the urge to make her into an immortal. Marius rescues Amadeo and takes him in. Marius decides to train and educate him to be a vampire. Two years after taking in Amadeo he meets Mael again. Mael realizes that Marius wants to make Amadeo a vampire and he advises against it. Not too long after, Amadeo is wounded in a battle with Lord Harlech and Marius turns him into a vampire. After they journey to Russia, Marius meets the Talamascan scholar, Raymond Gallant. At first he wants him to leave but then asks him of Pandora. The next night, Santino and his coven attack. Marius is fatally wounded but Bianca comes to help him. He turns her into a vampire. He takes Bianca to the shrine of Those Who Must Be Kept. Akasha gives him her blood and he begins to heal significantly. Bianca and Marius live in the shrine for many decades. He keeps in contact with Raymond Gallant who tells him that Pandora and a companion always return to the city of Dresden and that Amadeo is a coven leader in Paris. Marius goes to Paris to spy upon Amadeo, now Armand. Marius and Bianca move to Saxony, very near to Dresden. At last he finds Pandora and he declares that he will leave Bianca and live with her. Pandora refuses to leave Arjun, her companion because she made him. Marius leaves but the next night goes looking for them only to discover they’d gone on to Russia. Bianca leaves him. Marius, now all alone, moves further into the woods surrounding Dresden and remains there for a long time. In the 1700s, he moved to an island in the Aegean Sea. He finds a letter from Pandora; from the last night they’d been together in Dresden. In 1789, he answers the call of the vampire Lestat and brings him to the island where Lestat drinks from Akasha. After Lestat leaves, Marius remains alone with Those Who Must Be Kept. Around the 1980s, Marius brings them to America to live in the freezing North. In 1984, Akasha is awakened by Lestat. She rises up against him and buries him in the ice. Maharet sends Pandora and Santino to answer his cry for help. He is reunited with Armand. He attempted to reason with Akasha at the Sonoma compound but to no avail. When Akasha is destroyed, Marius is finally free of the burden of Those Who Must Be Kept. In 1990, when Lestat switches bodies, Marius shows up at Louis’ house to give Lestat a brief glance of his face and his immense anger. He was one of the many vampires present, looking over Lestat in his slumber on the chapel floor. He once again is reunited with Armand who has attempted suicide and survived. Marius makes Armand’s mortal children, Benji and Sybelle into vampires. Marius lives alone with Daniel until another blood drinker, Thorne arrives and Marius takes him into his house and tells him his tale. Thorne kills Santino whom Marius wants dead.
