Amel
An evil spirit known to the witches Mekare and Maharet, Amel is the source of vampire life. He fuses with Akasha's blood after she is fatally stabbed, and then requires blood to sustain his new life form, giving reason to a vampires need to drink blood to survive. His spirit spreads out into other vampires (through the transfer of blood) as they are created, connecting them mentally and physically to one another. As more vampires are made, Amel's thirst can be more easily feed, and as a result the ancient vampires, blood thirsty when they were created, no longer need blood to survive.


Akasha
Akasha an ancient Egyptian Queen humiliates the twins (Maharet & Mekare) by making them undergo a public rape. The spirit Amel avenges the twins. Meanwhile, an assassination attempt is made on Akasha and Enkil. They are both seriously wounded, and as Akasha's soul ascends, Amel joins with it and re-enters her body through her wounds, fusing with her heart and brain to produce a new entity: the vampire.


Enkil
An ancient Egyptian king who reigns before language was written and who is the first vampire made by Akasha. Enkil marries Akasha and together they turn their people away from the pracice of cannibalism and toward a worship of Osiris and the cultivation of grains. He has a vision of all things united in good, of channeling all forces to the same divine course.


Khayman
As a mortal, Khayman was the steward for King Enkil and Queen Akasha. Enkil orders Khayman to rape the witches Maharet and Mekare to prove their spiritual impotence. Following the rape, the evil spirit Amel tormented Khayman. Khayman was made a vampire by Akasha after Maharet tells Akasha her thirst for blood will decrease as more vampires are made. Later, he makes Mekare a vampire so she can gain the power to fulfil her prophecy of Akasha's doom.


Maharet
Maharet is actually a vampire who was one of the first generation of vampires made when Akasha was transformed. One of the red haired twins, her body is so old it is as hard as stone, she is also a witch. She is able to communicate with the spirits. Maharet did not choose to be a vampire, but as one she utilises her power to maintain a loving, nurturing consciousness of the human family that has descended from her only child - a mortal - whom Khayman fathered.


Mekare
One of the red-haired twins One of the red-haired twins. She can see the physical core of the spirits and control the spirits better than her sister, Maharet. When Khayman makes her a vampire, she in turn gives the Dark Gift to Maharet. The twins are then forcibly separated and Mekare is set adrift on Egypt's western shore. When Akasha is killed, Mekare consumes her brain and heart, thus, Mekare becomes the new Queen of the Damned.


Jesse
With long, curly red hair and green eyes, Jesse is only one in a long line of women in her family who possess these features and who inherit the ability to contact the supernatural. A descendant of the red haired twins, sired by Maharet when her life is endangered.
