Creed is a fresh, young, band from Tallahassee, Florida. With their intense lyrics, strong vocals, and incredible music, they have risen to the top of Billboard's Rock Charts and have gone Triple-Platinum all within a years time. But life hasn't always been easy for the members of Creed. The lead man of Creed, Scott Stapp, was raised in a strictly religious family. He was often punished for his love of rock music. This heavy religious childhood would reflect on Scotts songwriting, adding a strong spiritual side to his lyrics. At the age of 16, Scott left the comfortable, wealthy life he had with his parents and ran away. Living out of his car at one point, Scott began listening to rock music and writing songs with fellow college classmate, Mark Tremonti. Their influences ranged from Elvis, to The Doors, to Def Leppard.
Creed was created by Scott Stapp and Mark Tremonti. With the additions of Brian Marshall on bass and Scott Phillips on drums, Creed was complete. Creed recorded "My Own Prison" with an independent label in 1997. The recording session cost $6,000. They paid this with the money they got from playing local gigs and odd jobs. The producer was John Kurzweg, which Scott admires greatly. 3,000 copies were sold in Tallahassee all in 2 months time. Soon after Creed was signed to Wind-Up records. "My Own Prison" was re-recorded and in August 1997 was re-released. Creeds first single "My Own Prison" soon became their first #1, followed by "Torn", "What's This Life For?" and "One", all topping the charts at #1. Making Creed the first band ever to have four #1 hit singles off a debut album.
Scott and Mark's lyrics come straight from the heart. They have lived every word in their songs. "What's This Life For?" was written about the suicide of a former classmate of the two. The bands influences are obvious in their lyrics. Everyone from Metallica to Pantera to Soundgarden. It gives their music very different contrasts. Every song is unique. From the soulful sound of "Pity for A Dime" to the powerful force of "Ode." Creed touches on everyone's soul.
Instead of a rock band, Creed has become a family working together to produce great music. They give an unforgettable live performance. They may be a young band, but their responsibility and knowledge are present in their actions and songwriting. This will insure Creeds longevity for years to come.
