After the First War and the breaking apart of the continents, the Valar built an idyllic kingdom called Almaren (now known as the original dwelling place of the Valar), an island in the middle of the Great Lake deep inland in the midst of Middle-earth. In the north and south of Middle-earth they raised two titanic Lamps of Light. However, in the far north, the evil Valar Melkor raised the Ion Mountains and built his dark kingdom of Utumno in the icy north of Middle-earth. He then made war a second time by toppling the Lamps and destroying Almaren.
