X-Files
Close to my heart is the dark and inviting cult show X-Files. It is a disturbing look at how close we are to the paranormal and the truly weird. The interaction between the characters Mulder and Scully is cool and natural, erotic with out the theme of overt sexuality. The stories range from whimiscal to frightened to paranoid. The truth is out there. Believe the lie.
The Fountainhead
Ayn Rand, the purveyor of Objectivism. She created this classic book which led her to write the inspirational screenplay for the movie starring Gary Cooper and Patricia Neal. The story of Howard Roark is as inspiring as it is riveting. To be truly great is to have integrity, to be one man out of all the mass of humanity.
Dune
Frank Herbert was a sociological genius and wrote a story so breathtakingly awesome that he needed six books to tell it. The movie is a reflection of the man's vision. It is told in sand an sepia tones although the acting may not always rise to honor the creator's vision.
Gattaca
Genoism. The discrimination against man for no other reason than by virtue of his genes. This movie is a dark and deeply satisfying look at what our world may one day become. We are on the path right now but do not feel the stones beneath our feet. Let us let this film judge for us.
Night of the Comet
Now if you want a good laugh tempered with the good old eighties humor, check out this end of the world tragedy. Keep your eyes open for Commander Chakotay of Star Trek: Voyager fame.
Blade Runner
Ridley Scott creates a dark and drippy world of human synthetics (replicants) where Harrison Ford just takes off as the bounty hunter with a heart. Dark an dismal, disturbing and thought-provoking. A good movie for a rainy day.
The Matrix
This is a different picture of the Matrix, a movie I find as thought-provoking as exciting. The action sequences are top notch, lending credence to the idea that Hong Kong does deliver superior fight cinematography. An awesome script and worthy performances by Lawrence Fishburne and Keanu Reeves make the Matrix a definite keeper.
