Prologue

by nightflower

Years ago...

The boy pulled away the tall grasses to reveal a grating in the wall that led to the secret lab. He pried it off and was about to crawl into the room, when the girl held his arm and pleaded for him to stop. But he laughed and pulled her in with him.
It was dark inside, save for a strange green glow everywhere. But it was obvious that the children were quite accustomed to it and they began to explore the room.
There was machinery everywhere and rows and rows of strange glass coffin-like things. Behind the glass was a bright green liquid that was the source of the green light. There were babies inside, some almost one year out, some mere cells still dividing. The crypts were artificial wombs. The babies were plugged with wires and implants. Some were sleeping, but many were crying, wailing, as if they knew what nightmare they had been born into. The sound was deafening.
The boy led his sister down the halls of babies and green glowing liquid. The machinery they passed were labelled: 333. 334. 335....336...337...
At 338, the boy stopped and gazed at the little infant sleeping soundly in a bath of green substance. He pressed his hand against the glass, tracing the baby's profile with his finger. Suddenly his hand began to glow, with the same green glow as the substance...
A dark shadow fell upon them and they turned around...

"What are you doing here? You're not allowed here! This area is strictly forbidden! Now get out! GET OUT!"
She remembered the two children running out of the laboratory in fear, fear of their creator. They had run back to their own lab where the Fixed Ideas were put in charge of taking care of the little monsters.
The girl, now a grown woman, sat on the ledge of the building, with her companion, lost in her thoughts.
We were so innocent. But so were they, my brothers and sisters. And he wanted us killed, all of us, just because we were too human. Now I am all alone, but I swear, he will never harm a child, genetic freak or not, again.
The giant cat placed his huge black head on her lap to comfort her. She smiled and patted it. "You're right. No sense in dwelling in the past. C'mon Data 7. Let's go get some Fixed Ideas."
The panther growled in approvement as she stood up. Both jumped off the ledge onto the adjacent building. They leaped from rooftop to rooftop with supernatural speed and grace, illuminated by the moon.
