With short-season Class A under way, other familar young players are finding homes. Remember Dan Kelly, the hard-throwing youngster who the Pride scooped up in their free-agent draft back in April camp?
But, Pride Manager Butch Hobson realized after a while that Kelly was also in a bit over his head, and the team couldn't get him enough innings. So, he was released in mid-May with the idea he could hook up at a lower level.
Guess what? It worked. To make a long story short, he was scheduled to appear this weekend just down the road in Lowell with the Jamestown Jammers, the Atlanta Brave's New York- Penn League team, facing the Spinners.
The Braves reportly clocked Kelly at 88-90 mph, and needed his medical records from his representative, Andy May.
May sent the records off two weeks ago, but the Brave's secretary reportly lost them. Oops. Meanwhile, Tampa Bay's assistant scouting director called inquiring. Suddenly, the Braves got ahold of the medical stuff and presto! Dan Kelly's in a Brave new world.
