We call on all our elected officials to reject the Texas-Maine-Vermont Radioactive Waste Compact Bill which obligates VT to finance the construction of a radioactive waste dump in Sierra Blanca, TX. This bill is an immoral and environmentally unacceptable solution to the problem of radioactive waste, transferring deadly material away from its producers and into the backyards of low income and primarily Mexican-American and Mexican communities whose members have not been given any choice in its placement. The bill violates Vermonters’ respect for the earth, our responsibility for local control and environmental stewardship, and our sense of basic human equity. We urge you to reject the compact and begin the search for a better solution.
