The One Prologue
June 2000 Isabel and Howie's wedding
Star needed a break. She spent most of the night dancing. She got a drink and sat down at her table.
"Star, can I talk to you?" a male voice behind her asked.
Star turned around to find her boyfriend, Robert, with a serious look on his face.
"Sure!" she said as she looked at Lisette and Elena. "I'll be right back."
Robert led her to a quiet spot on the dance floor.
"What's up?" she asked.
"Star, baby, I don't know how to say this, but I found someone else. I don't want to be with you anymore."
"What do you mean you found someone else?"
"I found someone else to be with. I want to be with her. I love you and all that stuff, but I need a change. A chance to be free." He sighed and looked her straight in the eye. "Good-bye, Star."
"You're going to pack it up and leave? Just like that?"
"Baby, it's over between us. Ever since April, when you went on that trip with Isabel."
Star knew what he meant. She went on the Backstreet Boys American tour for 2 weeks. While she was there, she met someone else. She sighed. "Nothing happened between me and AJ, though."
"Well something happened to me while you were gone. I fell in love with someone else," he said as he started to leave.
Then he was gone. Lost in the crowd somewhere. She went to look for Isabel.
Star found Isabel, on the dance floor, with her husband.
"Star, what's wrong?" Isabel asked.
"Robert broke up with me!"
"Star, I'm so sorry."
Star tried to tell Isabel how sorry she was to tell her bad news on her wedding day, but Isabel just wouldn't listen. Her best friend was in pain, and Star was more important to her than dancing.
"I'll be right back," Isabel said, leaving her alone with Howie.
"I'm back," Isabel said with AJ right next to her.
"Star, you remember AJ, right?" Isabel asked.
"Of course I do. Hi, AJ."
"Hi, Star. Do you want to dance?" AJ asked.
"Sure!" She let AJ lead her to another spot on the dance floor.
"Hey! Isn't this one of your songs?"
AJ listened as "The One" starting playing. "Yeah. Hey! Now it's our song!" He smiled at her. "So what happened with Robert? I saw him leave a few minutes ago."
Star stopped dancing, and tried to look AJ in the eye. "I don't want to talk about it right now."
He put his arm around her. "It's ok, Star. I won't ask anymore. Let's go sit down, ok? We need a break."
He led her to her table. "He left me for someone else," she said without emotion as they went to her table.
"What?!?!?!"
"He left me for someone else," she said again as her voice began to crack.
"Shhhhhh. It's ok," he said as she buried her head in his shoulder. "I'll murder that bastard!" He turned to Star. "You can do so much better."
She laughed. "Like who? You?"
They looked at each other and laughed.
