Music

Music is your own experience, your own thoughts, your wisdom. If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn. They teach you there's a boundary line to music. But, man, there's no boundary line to art. Charlie Parker (1920-55), U.S. jazz musician.

Hi, this is me, Allison, again. Like I said, I love to make and listen to music. I play the flute in the Symphonic Band at my highschool; I love it. I also play in Marching Band in football season and I play in Pep band for sports games. I've taken privately since the 7th grade, and I've played in Contest for 5 years in a row. Two years ago, a flute player from my school placed 2nd in state! She is so awesome at flute, and I hope I can play like her some day.

Well, I played at Contest again this year! I played a wonderful piece called Sonatine, by a French composer, SanCan. I also played a duet again with my friend Jenna. Our duet was called Grand Concerto Fantasy, by Luigi Hugues. Well, this year, there were two winners in the Solo Division, and Jenna and I both won first place! So we are each going to State for Solo, and we also won again on our duet! To see a picture of me from State last year, and a picture of Jenna and I this year at Contest, click here. State was a wonderful experience, and it made me realize how many awesome players there are out there!! Wow, it's amazing.

I also play the piano.

I've been playing for 9 years! I play classical music like Bach, Chopin, and Mozart. I've played the piano in tons of recitals, auditions, and competitions. For Auditions (a Competition)this year, I played two pieces; one was a Bach piece, a prelude and fugue, and the other was the first movement of Beethoven's Pathetique. Piano is a wonderful instrument to just sit down and play. You know, unlike flute, where you have to put it together, get the stand, etc. I love playing classical stuff, but also popular stuff. One of my favorite pieces to play is Let It Be, by the Beatles!

Tenor sax is also a fun instrument to play. I've been playing in Jazz Band for 4 years, and it's a lot of fun! It's such a different kind of music from the traditional classical music I normally play! We do a lot of old rock and jazz stuff. Our High School Jazz Band is going great, and we have lots of performances and stuff. Actually, last year, we went to the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival in Moscow, Idaho! It was a blast!

This is a picture of me taken by our local newspaper; it was a band concert in 7th grade. Also, my freshman year I played the sax for the Pit Orchestra for our school musical, "Bye Bye Birdie"! It was so much fun, and the music was awesome. If you ever get the opportunity to either be in a musical or play in the Pit, do it! It is an awesome experience. I'm playing in the Pit Orchestra again this year, on flute, piccolo, and saxophone! We're doing Guys and Dolls this year, and it's really coming along!

Besides making music, I love to listen to music, too. My CD Player is always on at home, and in my car! :) My favorite kind of music right now is Christian stuff; I like singers like Cindy Morgan and Michelle Tumes, and I also like more upbeat groups like Five Iron Frenzy and Insyderz. And because I play classical music on the flute and piano, I also like a bit of classical. Not too much, though. :) I would like to know what you like to listen to (or play). Just email me!
