Rainbird, aka Tess Armstrong, was an assassin for Toby Z, head of Security for Buckley Enterprises, the wealthiest, most influential corporation in the megalopolis of New Mission, a metro area in the Pacific Northwest. She quit her job after learning that her mentor, Toby Z's right hand man Ratio, was assigned to kill her lover, one of Buckley Enterprise's lawyers. He was marked for death because Tess was falling in love with him. This was unacceptable to Toby Z, for his own ambitions required Rainbird's existence to be mired in hopeless anguish and bitter cynicism.
Toby Z is actually an ancient god; Tobadzistini, the Native American God of War. He was entrapped by The Raven centuries ago, before the coming of the white man, for nearly killing another entity also known as The Rainbird. This Rainbird was the only Being in Existence not created by The Raven, and thus she gave him hope.
Now the Rainbird's spirit, the essence of Hope itself, coexists with that of the mortal woman Tess Armstrong. Tess, and the Rainbird from whom she unwittingly took her "code name" are all that stand between Toby Z/Tobadzistini and the destruction of civilization as we now know it. It is well catalogued that Hope can overcome all things including the destructive forces of war, but there's a catch...Tess does not believe in The Spirit of Hope, much less that she IS the Spirit of Hope...
Tess is on a mission of revenge, but in order to achieve that end she must first find redemption for her past. With her guns, her body armor, and her wits, she will seek it. In so doing, she will come to realize that she is in fact Rainbird, the Spirit and Symbol of Hope...
