Well this is a Barbarians Sword if I have ever seen one.
I made it in my Father's Foundry about 4 years ago. I did not forge it in the conventional sense, with a hammer and anvil, but took as much time making it I'm sure. The blade was made out of stock steel, not hardened at all. So the blade is still very soft and would not hold up in battle. It was made with a milling machine, to give it the diamond slot shape and the smaller end on it.
Both of those characteristics were hard to make happen with a milling machine but with a little jury rigging and making something for it to lay in, I got the proper effect. The Hilt was a piece of thick steel that had a sort of pitted suface to it, and I thought it would add to the rustic, sort of used look of the sword. I cut the hilt out with some acetylene torches and then ground the shape out the way I wanted with a very large dremel. For those of you that dont' know, it's like a big dentist's drill. *wink* private joke..
Anyways, the Scabbard I made out of some really thick leather and then added some brass rivets up both sides, and then laced it all up together. There is also some lace work on the guard of the hilt that I don't think I could reproduce if I tried. I may take a pic of that and post it here as well for people that are interested in leather work and that. The sword is a work in progress much like this site, and I do have plans to put a stone in the hilt, clean the surface oxidyzation off it...(lol) and finish up the scabbard with some nice caps for each end. Look in again later and see the new pics..
