As a child growing up this was
a very special day ..
Parade started off the day
gathering of all the spring flowers
gun salute over the cemetary
WOW ... What a great day this was!
People everywhere!!!
Flowers everywhere!!!
As I got older ..
the day took on a different meaning
We would visit the graves
of family and friends
and talk about who they were and what
they had done ... how we knew them!
It was a special day, not only spent
with my parents but also
with my grandmothers!
The spring air would fill the valley
with the scent of Lilacs and
hummm ... deep breaths
would bring very peaceful moments
of joy and happiness
and still do .. to this day!!!
One of the most impressive sights
was the area where all the soldiers
were buried .. the white crosses ..
the small amercian flags ..
that seemed to go on .. forever!
What a breath-taking site!!
Today .. this day is still very special
and should be a day to remember
not only those who have died for this
country ... but for all those
who we have loved and who
have touched our lives!
For they have shaped us and formed
us into who we are today.
Memorial day is the day that has
been set aside in history to remember
those that have given their lives
in order for us to remain free!
It is a day to honor .. not only those
who have died ..but should also honor those
who are still fighting to keep
our country free ..so that we will be free!
Harry Truman ...
"Good name and honor are worth more
than all the gold and jewels ever mined"
"All gave some - Some gave all" ..
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow ..
"Your silent tents of green
We deck with fragrant flowers;
Yours has the suffering been,
The memory shall be ours."
Martin Luther King Jr.
March on Washington, 1963
"I have a dream that one day this
nation will rise up and live out the
true meaning of its creed:
'We hold these truths to be self-evident that
all men are created equal'".
Abraham Lincoln, 1858
"A house divided against itself cannot stand.
I believe this government cannot endure
permanently half slave and half free."
Eulogy for a Veteran
Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the Gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the mornings hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
of quiet birds in circled flight,
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there, I did not die.

Memorial Day
"These heroes are dead.
They died for liberty-they died for us.
They are at rest.
They sleep in the land they made free,
under the flag hey rendered stainless,
under the solemn pines,
the sad hemlocks,
the tearful willows,
the embracing vines.
They sleep beneath the
shadow of the clouds,
careless alike of sunshine or storm,
each in the windowless palace of rest.
Earth may run red with other wars-they are at peace.
In the midst of the battles,
in the roar of conflicts,
they found the serenity of death."
