Known as the SRJK
(TAMIL) , Jalan Watson, the school has a 75 year old history. Having started
virtually unknown as a very small school in its early years, it has become one
of the biggest Tamil School in the nation.
The school first started in 1920 and
was under the supervision of the Klang. District Council. In 1941 because of the
Japanese invasion, the school was completely destroyed. Then in 1950 a new
building was put up in the same place by the government. There after it was
known as Government Tamil School. Mr.P.Sebastian became the first Headmaster
.This school had an enrolment of 86 students with 3 teachers .
In the year 1951 the school was
combined with another school in Camp Road known as the Barathidhasan Tamil
School. On 1.9.1952 Mr.G.William Rasiah was made the acting headmaster with the
death of Mr.P. Sebastian .On 1.3.1954 the Education Authorities made
Mr.C.Nadesan the headmaster. In 1954 there were 152 students with 6 teachers. At
that time the school was not well; known among the residents in the area. So in
1956 a booklet was
produced in conjunction with Parents Day cum Exhibition in the school The
booklet made many people aware of the existence of the school.
From that time onwards the school
began to grow rapidly .Year by year the number of students increased. A semi
-forested land near by was made into a play ground and fenced. Electricity was
then supplied to the school. In line with the new education policy, the Padang
Road Tamil School started in 1954 and was known as St.Joseph's Tamil School
which together with the National Tamil School merged with this school in 1966.
Another step in the progress of the school was the formation
of the Old Boys Association in 1962. Further in 1963 with the cooperation of the
Social Welfare Department a canteen was built .Mr.Raja mani was made the school
clerk. In 1965 there was a shortage of classrooms because of the increase
in students enrolment .The Education Department donated RM18,000 ; a fund -
raising campaign from the public brought in another RM21,000. This
resulted in further 5 classrooms together with an office . An office assistant
was appointed and 3 gardeners were recruited.
In 1966 another Tamil school merged
with this school . Then in 1970 the government at a cost of RM30,000 Built 3
additional classrooms , a staff room and a toilet . The student enrolment rose
to 764 .There were morning afternoon sessions with a total of 17 classrooms and
21 teachers. The parents come into the picture with the formation of the
first Parent Teacher Association in 1974.In 1975 the dock Road Tamil school
merged with this school . At the end of Feb 1976 Mr.C.Nadesan P.J.K retired.
Mr.A.Mariannan took over as acting headmaster. When Mr.Mariannan retired in
1977,Mr.M.Nallayan because acting Headmaster.
In 1978 Mr.M.Doraisamy P.P.S. was
made the headmaster. With the rapid rise in pupil enrolment and number of teachers, it
was obvious that the school needed an entirely new building. everyone concerned
worked tirelessly towards this end.
In 1983 Mr.M.Doraisamy retired and
Mr.G.Subramaniam P.P.N.,A.M.N., took over responsibilities as headmaster. At
that time, the Deputy Minister of education visited the school and took note of
the conditions of the school and its needs.
In 1984 Mr.G.Subramaniam was
transferred to the Kuala Langat P.P.D. Mr.Ramasamy assured responsibilities as
headmaster. The following year (in 1985) Mr.V.Ramasamy was transferred to
another school. Mr.M.Muniandy P.P.N. was appointed the new headmaster.
Meanwhile the Parent - Teacher
Association , the Old Boys Association and Various other Associations in Port
Klang pooled their efforts to raise funds for the new school building . The
M.I.C. national President Dato Seri Samy Vellu's help was also sought. In
1986 Mr.M.Muniandy was transferred to another school. He was replaced by
Mr.M.Nallayan. It was during Mr.Nallayan tenure as headmaster that the Ministry
of Education built the new three storey building with all the basic facilities,
including a canteen. As a result of this, pupil enrolment increased and passed
the one thousand mark.
In 1991 Mr. M. Nallayan was
transferred and Mr. P. Pachiapan, PPN was appointed as the headmaster. The
school saw much improvement in Curriculum and Co - Curriculum under the
administration of Mr. P. Pachiapan,PPN. When Mr. P.Pachiappan PPN retired
on 30 April 1998, Mr. Y. Arimugan assumed responsibilities as the new
headmaster. Under Mr.Y.Arimugan's tenure a fully equipped Information Technology
Centre was completed.
Besides that the Resource Centre too is undergoing modifications to give it a
new look. Vibrant changes in the educational development of the school are in
the making.
