Drawn And Quartered

The late 80's early 90's saw the start of a whole new metal scene with the rebirth of Death Metal. As Death Metal hit big in the US, bands like Morbid Angel and Deicide gave many people their first taste of extreme metal. While the Florida/Morrisound scene dominated Death Metal there were still many bands grinding out incredible music, but not getting the attention like their southern brethren. Drawn and Quartered seem to be one of the bands fitting into this category. Undaunted, they've spent the last four years churning out classic brutal sickness on par with any of their Death Metal peers. The following interview was conducted with Drawn and Quartered guitarist Kelly in September 1997 following their amazing show at the Vogue.

ATL) How about we start with getting a little history of the band. Member changes? Length of Drawn And Quartered has been around?

Kelly) Drawn And Quartered started in '94. Matt who came from Illinois, myself and Herb the vocalist. We were doing a band called Plaque Bearer. We had a demo and did shows in '93. From the reminisce of Plaque Bearer we formed Drawn And Quartered, rehearsed and wrote for about two years be for we started playing shows in '96. Then later in '96 we recorded a demo, which was never mixed, but we did release a rough mix. So hopefully some day we will remix, but now were considering recording new stuff.

ATL) Recently I got this promo package and in big bold letters it read "Death Metal Lives". Do you feel that death metal has died?

Kelly) Yeah, death metal needed a shot in the ass. In my opinion, black metal came along and I think metal itself has been chewed up, converted, spit out. Now were starting to see the modern metal, the future of metal, talking all realms of metal, European influence, 80' s influence, 90's influence, British and etc.

ATL) So is Drawn And Quartered trying to bring back the early death metal? Do you feel that there is any kind of spotlight for death metal anymore?

Kelly) I think we'll be part of that scene that's going to evolve. I've been into this style since about '92 and I just decided to do this style. I've always been influenced by metal. European, Bathory, thrash, Slayer, Destruction, Possessed, grind-core and all various styles.

ATL) When I first heard the name Drawn And Quartered, I first thought of Cancer's Hung Drawn And Quartered. Is that were the name was taken?

Kelly) Well that's what I thought too. Herb came up with the name. We've got a mass murder, execution, serial killer, tortured, old mid-evil, and of course I hate to bring up Christianity in any shape or form.

ATL) So this is what your lyrics are about . Is there any personal aspects of it?

Kelly) Herb writes all the lyrics. He's got a degree in English. He's into it but he kind of drags his ass on getting us copies of the lyrics. I'm trying to get copies for the demo. I haven't read all the lyrics, but I know some of them.

ATL) What do you think of the scene coming from the past couple years?

Kelly) It's been kind of disappointing. I think it has slowly gradually grown. It hasn't been that noticeable, but the people who are into it need to find out what's going on, the shows. Trying to reach these people that's the problem.

ATL) How do feel about the local scene and what bands have you played with?

Kelly) Surprisingly there's some heavy bands. Lately I heard some demos from New York and all around different places. There's some good shit out there. The original prime line up of Blood Ritual was pretty good. But I guess we'll see how that goes. Darkenwood is good. There's a band from Portland called Thy Infernal, they rip ass. Also we have Tasty Gore and from Spokane Umbilical Cord. We have a show set up with these bands. I'm really looking forward to playing that show.
