Burning Witch

For some of you who don't know Stephen, he's the author of Descent Magazine, a local, nationwide, and International Death Metal magazine. He's a very cool guy and really helps out the scene in Seattle. His band, Burning Witch, is a black metal band that's been around for a few years now, and is defiantly worth checking out if you can ever find them.

ATL) Your moving soon right?
SO)
I'm moving at the end of the month. (England). I'll be working with the people who put out Burzum and just signed Mayhem. I'll be doing graphic design stuff.

ATL) Are you going to start a new band over there?
SO)
Maybe. I would like to, I would probably go crazy if I don't. I don't know because the town I'm going to be living in, all the guys from Cradle of Filth live in that town. (ATL: those guys fucking rock). I'm not really into their band, but the town has only 5000 people, so I'm sure I'll be hanging out with them.

ATL) Is your newest recording going to be released at all?
SO)
We just recorded this week.

ATL) This is your third recording, right?
SO)
Well we did one demo, but it didn't get released. We did a record called "Towers". Steve Albini recorded us. It's coming out on this label called Head Not Found, which is run by the editor from Slayer Magazine. He's a real good friend of mine. And we just recorded again this week, something called Brip Cannon Breeds, and hopefully that will come out. I think it's great, I mean we were only in the studio two days, and we got four songs done and mixed.

ATL) Didn't you get looked at by Relapse?
SO)
Some people at relapse were into "The Witch", but they never did anything. The way Relapse works is they usually sign bands that have previous releases and since Burning Witch had no main name in the scene, ....well. That's the way they work though, they want a garented sale.

ATL) So why are you moving to England then?
SO)
It's an offer, an opportunity for me to continue on the path that I've created for myself. Because, for the past year, I've been working for myself, doing layout of band CD's and shit. I've been living off of it.

ATL) Do you feel like you would let down Burning Witch by taking off?
SO)
It's a hard decision, I mean it's something I can't turn down. But I'm really into Burning Witch right now. I'm really excited about it, but this job is for 3 months, and if it goes longer, then it does, if not maybe I'll come back. We can continue, but this feels like a transitional point in my life. I have to explore that avenue. I know so many people in Europe, but have never met any of them, and now I'm going to. And those bonds that we have are going to be solidified.

ATL) So you've never been to Europe before. I read your fanzine allot, and most of those bands ore from Europe. How do you get in contact with these bands?
SO) I write to them, they write to me. I hear from them.

ATL) Do you keep in contact with your old singer?
SO) Runhill? From Thor's Hammer? Oh yeah. She lives in Oslo.

ATL) Is she doing anything musically?
SO) She's fucking the guys from Mysticom. She was going out with one of the guys from Emperor for like a year. She dumped him, broke his heart, and the next thing you, he's writing love songs about her. I did the lay out for their new record, all the artwork and shit. I also typed in all their lyrics, and I swear, at least one of their songs was a love song. But yeah, I really do need to hook up with her. I haven't seen her in two years, and she's one of my best friends.

ATL) What's your views in the Seattle scene? Bands like Darkenwood, Faustus?
SO) Faustus sucks ass. We have a war with Faustus.

ATL) Why is that?
SO)
We played this show, it was supposed to be Overkill headlining on like the reunion tour, with Faustus and Burning Witch. Overkill canceled so Faustus didn't even show up. So we were like, what the fuck. They suck. They're white trash.

ATL) They're 80's metal:
SO) I love 80's metal, but there like a bad 80's metal. But as far as the Seattle scene goes I think really for the past month it's grown allot because of Darkenwood, Burning Witch, and this other band just moved up here from San Francisco called Corvus Coraxe. They're a black metal band, I haven't heard them yet, but I'm good friends with them all. There's another black metal band in Seattle that got members from Infestor. Its the bass and the guitar player. I haven't heard them yet but I heard it's incredible. Then there's like Blood Ritual and a bunch of other bad death metal bands.

ATL(Caleb) I'm starting a black metal band.
SO If you do it, don't sound like anybody else, because black metal is going to die once America hits on. What's going to happen is, every one is going to copy every one and it's going to suck. But do it. I'm totally supportive of it, just try to do something unique.
