MIDNIGHT FAIRY

©1999 BY J. NICHOLAS LEWIS

There she was on a gloomy night, seductively bathing herself in a lake deep within a forgotten forest, with her enchanting unicorn nearby. The moon was full and the vibrant stars twinkled from above. I stood still beneath the dark veils of the enshrouding trees, observing her.

As curiosity gnawed at the corner of my heart I could no longer stay put. I had to get a closer look. So, surreptitiously, as not to make a single sound, I ambled closer, keeping myself cloaked within the wood’s shadows.

Within moments I was close enough to see the detail in her flawless visage—her curvy, lithe, hourglass-shaped body, the creamy perfection of her skin tinted with a pristine blue pallor, her willowy shoulders, her voluptuous bosom, and that gorgeous long glistening blue-hair that fell to her waist. But there were other features that she possessed that I found to be a frightening contrast to her enigmatic beauty. The she-creature had large blue bat-like wings protruding from her back that occasionally fluttered and long black horns upon her forehead. The peculiar contrast of demon and angel led me to believe that she was a succubus in rapture or perhaps a fallen angel that escaped the clutches of hell. But then I thought to myself… if that was the case… why was the white unicorn with her? Surely, a creature of such purity would not be in the presence of a demon.

I pondered the notion of fleeing, but found that I could not break the entranced gaze fixated on her. I slowly moved from the tree I stood behind and nestled behind a throng of thick shrubberies where no vegetation was beyond. The moment I leaned to a knee, the vociferating crack of a twig had mistakenly alarmed her. Her fiery-blue melancholy eyes gazed upon the shrubberies I nestled behind.

When I saw her delicate oval shaped face looking to my direction, uncertainty hindered any further movement. I stood still as a stone; my mind blanked, and like a black widow that creeps upon its web toward its prey fear crawled up my spine. The fey she-creature’s face was expressionless as her eyes reconnoitered the shrubberies I cowered behind. It was a heated stalemate between her and I—would she notice me or would she carry on with her business oblivious to her surroundings?

It was only a moment when her gaze locked into place. I had this abysmal feeling that she had noticed me. But then… she situated her arms across from her as though she were preparing to play a harp. And like an angelic ballerina performing a dance her arms elegantly swayed. She began to sing in a language I could not decipher. But it mattered not for her voice was far beyond heavenly bliss. It filled me with rapture. It was as if God had just opened the gates of heaven to me.

Her beauty became so irresistible that I dropped my obfuscation and stepped out of the shadows. Shockingly, she was neither startled nor baffled by my appearance. It was as if she knew where I was that entire time. The furrowing of her eyebrows indicated curiosity. She offered a hand to me, beckoning me.

As I approached her, her enigmatic snow-white unicorn yelped uncontrollably and its wings expanded causing me to halt out of fear that it would strike at me. The succubus looked deeply into the unicorn’s gloomy eyes. “Shhhhhhhh….” She said, calming the heavenly creature. Tears that soon turned to ice trickled from the unicorn’s eyes and snowflakes gracefully fell from the sky. The sky turned to a grayish haze; big-bellied clouds enveloped the moon. No more did the unicorn yelp.

Again, she signaled me. “Do not be afraid—come to me,” her seductive voice intoned.

I now stood in the lake’s water where she stood nude and in awe. Her long flowing hair that framed the picturesque image of her face blew majestically with the gentle wind as her enchanting eyes looked deeply into mine. Her right hand reached out to meet the winter pallor of my face. Her long spidery fingers meandered up and down my chainmail. I found myself entranced by her. I relaxed my hand that gripped the hilt of my broadsword and fell into a calm state of euphoria as our eyes interlocked.

Her voluptuous cold moist lips set upon mine. Under the moonlight we kissed. And though it was brief, it was the most exquisite and passionate kiss ever to be laid upon my lips.

Suddenly... her unicorn bellowed a moan of distress that resonated stridently throughout the surreal forest. The snow fell in larger quantities and the sky became laden with a billowing black mist. The abrupt change alarmed the she-creature. The only words she could let out were “I must go now…”

She ascended from the water and picked up a black robe, cloaking her naked body. I stood in the lake like a statue encased in ice, motionless and awestruck. A dazzling smile eliciting her pearl-white teeth crept upon her face as she looked back to me before hoping onto her unicorn. I could sense her communicating the words “Perhaps there will be another time for us” through telepathy, a gift I never thought I had until I met her.

The unicorn’s angelic white-wings expanded and gracefully she flew into the air. I then woke up and forever she was gone...
