Fruits Basket is about a girl, Honda Tohru, who was raised by her single mother. When her mother dies in a car accident, she decides to support herself by working at several part-time jobs and living in a tent while going to highschool. In school, she meets Sohma Yuki, a quiet but very popular boy who lives with his cousin, Shigure. Apparently, Tohru had set up her tent on their land, and they decide to take her in as a housekeeper when a landslide destroys her makeshift home.
The Sohma family has secrets though. Certain people in the family turn into animals of the Chinese zodiac when hugged by people of the opposite sex. This creates many interesting situations between Tohru and the boys.
Fruits Basket is a fairly light-hearted and happy series, although it gets more serious later on when more of the Sohma family's dark secrets get revealed. The anime spans 26 episodes, and the manga byTakaya Natsuki is ongoing. I really recommend this series if you're into sweet, funny shoujo series. A warning to all males: if extreme Card Captor Sakura-type sweetness is not for you, then avoid this series by all means.
