Miaka Yuki
A 15-year-old junior high school student, Miaka is preparing for her high school entrance exams with her best friend Yui Hongo when she encounters an ancient Chinese novel called “The Universe of the Four Gods.” Not unlike Serena in Sailor Moon, Miaka is sweet, skatter-brained, and loves eating. She falls in love with Tamahome, one of the seishi who protects her.
Yui Hongo
Blond Yui is Miaka’s best friend, and fellow junior high school examinee. She also gets sucked into “The Universe of the Four Gods,” and tragic circumstances make her turn against her friend. She is in love with Tamahome and wants to separate him and Miaka at any cost.
Tamahome
Handsome young Tamahome is an 18-year-old martial artist. On his forehead glows the character for oni, or “ogre.” He first appears to care about nothing besides money, but we later learn that its only to take care of his poor family. Tamahome is deeply in love with Miaka.
Tasuki
Foul-mouthed and ill-tempered, the red-headed ex-bandit Tasuki wields a flame-throwing tessen (iron fan). He likes fighting and says that he hates women, but he really does care about Miaka. The character “wing” appears on his wrist.
Chiriko
This precocious 13-year-old is an adept problem solver. He enjoys spending his free time studying for the civil service exams. The character “stretching” is located on his foot.
Hotohori
The 18-year-old Emperor of Konan, Hotohori’s narcissism early in the series gives way to an honorable maturity; he loves Miaka but she only loves Tamahome. His character “star” is located on his neck.
Nuriko
Nuriko bears the character for “willow,” located on the chest over the heart. She first appears as a princess at court and has a crush on Hotohori, but it is later revealed that HE is, in fact, a man. His romantic feelings for Hotohori are never requited.
Chichiri
Chichiri is the oldest ouut of the seven Suzaku seishi. He carries the character of “water well” on his knee and is the sole magic-user among the seven. He is a wandering monk and trained for three years with Taitsukun, the overseer of the world.
Mitsukake
A stoic, soft-spoken, and immeasurably skilled healer, Mitsukake has the power to heal once a day. The character “sadness” is located on his palm.
