In the first bunch episodes, the American production companies transformed Zoycite from a guy in the Japanese version to a girl in the American version probably because he had a relationship with another man, Malachite (Kunzite in the Japanese version).
In the next season of the show, 2 more sailor Scouts are introduced: Haruka (Sailor Uranus) who is a crossdresser and fools everyone into thinking that she's a guy; the only person who knows her secret is her lover Michiru (Sailor Neptune). Oh yeah, and did I mention that they're going to release Sailor Moon S in America with Haruka and Michiru as sisters?
And then there's the Sailor Stars story arc -- the last story arc in the series -- where the three Sailor Starlights are guys but turn into girls when they transform (kinda remindes me of Ranma 1/2). To make things even more complicated, one of the Starlights has a huge crush on Serena.
And then there's the alien guy who arguably has a crush on Serena's boyfriend in the Sailor Moon R movie. OK, so you get the point. I'll stop rambling now. And if you want to get the uncut episodes, you can buy them from fansub distros that can be found here.
