Medical Staff Person Explained: During the guards' six weeks training, they are taught how to use pepper spray properly, and are fully aware of the results of not showering after pepper spray. If you do not shower it off, it continues to burn until you do, and they use the knowledge to make it worse for inmates. More cases are coming in of guards refusing the shower afterward. New hires are also taught that if you shower with hot water after pepper spray is used, the heat makes the burn worse. When an errant guard is caught making the inmate shower in hot water, he claims he got the hot and cold handles mixed up. Make no mistake: They know what they are doing and there is no excuse for it except pure meanness. All we are asking is professionalism on the job.
