I was lucky enough to get to see the preliminaries of the 1998 Sagit World Cup in Vancouver, BC on April 17th. There, they had some of the best names in gymnastics: Svetlana Khorkina, Gina Gogean, Ludivine Furnon, Simona Amanar, Elena Produnova, Ivan Ivankov, Alexei Nemov, Zhang Jinjing, Sergei Fedorchenko, Jesus Carballo, and many other gymnasts.
Here are some of the highlights of the men's meet:
Valery Belenky (GER)- He had great swing on both Pommels and P-Bars. He garned a 10.0 Start Values on each. His P-Bar routine included a giant-diamidov, giant-diamodov, giant, Tippelt, healy, hop 3/4 piroette combination.
Leszek Blanik (POL)-He was the only man in prelims that had two 10.0 Vaults! He competed a Tsukahara double back and a handspring double front. Unfortunatly, he under-rotated both.
Alexei Bondarenko (RUS)-He competed top skills on each event he attempted. Alexei competed in Pommel Horse, P-Bars, Vault, Rings, and High Bar.
Kasper Fardan (DEN)-His Floor was excellent, and his High Bar was outstanding! On Floor he did two of the popular .5 tenth passes (layout arabian, front 1/1, rudi and whip, 3/2 twist, rudi)! He also tumbled a clean 5/2 punch front and a full-in. His High Bar set was out-of-this-worldly! He did a piked Kovacs, tucked Kovacs immediate tucked Kovacs, and he dismounted with his TRIPLE PIKE! He took four large steps on it though.
Sergei Fedorchenko (KAZ)-His skill's speak for themselves! On Floor he did a layout double-double (fall), whip-3/2 twist-rudi, 1080 degree Russian (Fedorchenko), rudi, double layout. Because he is the reigning Vault world champion, he did not have to compete in prelims on that event. The other event that he did was High Bar. He competed a wicked set full of Kolman (1/1 twisting Kovacs), Kovacs immediate Kovacs (both tucked), Rybalko (hop 3/2 over the bar to el-grip, but he fell on this], and a triple-twisting double layout to a perfect stick!
Alexei Nemov (RUS)-He was the biggest name at the meet. On Floor (9.45 for 1st place), he did a double layout full out, front layout-front full-Rudi combination, double full-punch front 1 1/4, and he dismounted with a double pike stuck cold. He did great on Pommel Horse as well. He scored a 9.5 and took second on that event.
