Some Things About ME

In all of my arrogance and glory, I...decided to devote an entire webpage to...myself...

Well, the year was 1997 (or so) and I was just a clueless little tyke who did not realize people might not care to read about me. That's why this exists in the first place.

This site still stands in the "second" place for the silly reason that I have made a few webpages for actors, which has been interesting to do. One thing I have learned from doing that is that people occasionally think that those pages were...made by the actual person, though, so this is also my way of showing people that I am not Dylan Baker, Casey Siemaszko or Jeroen Krabbe. I'm just a fan. Not a squealing, screaming fanatic, but I do like their acting a lot.

Anyway, "rabbiting" on...that's probably why people are here in the first place, because...say, my name sounded familiar and you want to know if you went to school with me (if so, feel free to email). Whatever the case may be...here is a little more on me.

Name: Melissa Nicole Tillinghast (and yes, if that's your last name, we're probably related)

Born: October 2nd, 1980 (so I don't have to update this yearly with an age)

Located: Washington State, I spend most of my time in Olympia and Gig Harbor

Family: Two parents, four sisters, one brother, three in-laws, two cats, somewhere between three and six "sort of" cats (my parents live in "the sticks" and these feral cats hang around and "sponge" off the food left for their actual cats. They're cute, so I don't mind). There's also a mess of dogs I grew up with, including and "evil" Yorkshire terrior that lives with me. I'm "closer" to the cats, however, although I would one day like a Standard Poodle.

Religion/how I "vote": Some people are appalled when asked this question. It doesn't bother me. I'm a Baptist, though lately churches I attend have been such things as "community fellowship." I'm also a Conservative. There are not a lot of Conservatives in Olympia (it seems) so that can be interesting/annoying. Once I was "harassed" for reading an Ann Coulter book.

Occupation/aspirations: I'm a graduate of St. Martin's College, where I studied Criminal Justice. The ideal occupation would be something in that field. I've also worked with kids a lot, so maybe juvenile probation. Who knows? Actually, what I would LIKE to be is an attorney, but who knows...

Favorites: One of my favorite things to do is "absorb myself" in various forms of mass media.I enjoy movies, television and music. While I don't intentionally chose to like movies/shows/entertainers that well, say, not everybody follows, I notice it tends to end up that way, such as...

Favorite actors: I tend to watch/enjoy the movies of actors I enjoy. As you might have guessed, my three favorite actors are Jeroen Krabbe, Dylan Baker, and Casey Siemaszko (who might be my "very" favorite). I also enjoy the acting of Frank Whaley, Robert Sean Leonard, Timothy Hutton, Christian Bale, William H. Macy, Campbell Scott, Tom Hulce, Anthony Michael Hall, David Hyde Pierce, Gary Sinise, Christian Slater,Matthew Broderick, Jerry O'Connell,Gary Oldman, and Robert Downey Jr. I tend to follow the careers of actors more than actresses, but I do appreciate the work of Nina Siemaszko, Amy Irving and Isabella Rossellini.

Usually I am drawn to movies featuring actors I like. Sometimes I end up liking movies I was "stuck" watching because somebody else wanted to, or the movie was shown at school. Whatever the case may have been, some movies I have especially enjoyed have been The Fugitive, Of Mice and Men (the Gary Sinise-directed version), Annie (NOT that one from the late 1990's, or whenever..the one with Albert Finney), Psycho, Immortal Beloved, The Jimmy Show, and A Midnight Clear. Some are slightly more well known than others.

Television My taste in television is slighly more "mainstream." I mostly enjoy watching reruns, simply because modern television does not offer much for me anymore. One day the "new" shows I watch will (hopefully) become reruns anyway. I enjoy Frasier, The Shield, I Love Lucy, I Dream of Jeannie, the Degrassi series', and Star Search. I also enjoy some of the silly "pop culture" shows on VH1 (such as I Love the '80s) and I like to watch shows featuring stand-up comedians, providing they are not too dirty or obsessed with talking about their love lives.

Music: Joe Jackson is my absoute favorite, but I also enjoy Ben Folds (and the Ben Folds Five), Graham Parker, Steely Dan, XTC, Freedy Johnston, They Might Be Giants, Marshall Crenshaw, John Hiatt, Drew Barfield, and Graham Maby. I was once told I had the taste of a forty-one year-old male, and appropriately enough, I discovered my sister's former boss--a forty-something year-old male--and I like many of the same artists.

Other Interests/Hobbies,etc I enjoy reading such works as "social commentary" type books on issues like politics and/or the media; mysteries (I like Sarah Paretsky); and a whole range of other materials that pass the time, make me feel nostalgic, or that I find humorous. I also like studying the Hiss-Chambers case. Yes, what a dork I am. I'm not even in school, but I spent a lot of time learning about that case when I was in school and it's helped me learn to appreciate history, politics, and society, in general.

Yeah, yeah, anything else... I like "little" things like warm weather and waking up to a blue sky, attempting to play musical instruments (I am a horrible drummer and a bad piano player), the color grey, attending open court sessions, being amused, the sound of cats purring, going through old VHS tapes and finding strange commercials or shows that I have not seen in at least a decade, popcorn, listening to songs I actually enjoy on the radio, Americanos, family get-togethers, and general "relaxed" feelings.

Dislikes/fears, etc

Being that this is some long, rambling page about things that I enjoy and make me tick, well...here is a little of what I *don't* enjoy so much.

Entertainers: Tom Cruise, Martin Short, Janeane Garafolo, John Mayer, Renee Zellwegger, Ellen Degeneres, Pink, John Travolta, George Clooney, Sheryl Crow, Ashton Kutcher, Bonnie Raitt, and Richard Gere. I'm sure they are all lovely people and all of that good stuff. As entertainers, however, they just dont, well, appeal to me.

Movies/Television Shows Everytime see the following, I immediately wish I hadn't... Do the Right Thing;Born on the Fourth of July, Platoon, and many other Oliver Stone films; Emma; That '70s Show; and Gilmore Girls, all of which have managed to irritate me and/or make me nausous beyond belief.

Songs Even good singers write the occasional annoying song. I love Joe Jackson, but I can't stand when any song has a chorus consisting simply of the words(?): "whoa ho... oh, oh... oh, oh oh oh oh..." as the supposedly great "Real Men" does. I also deplore nonsensical, cutesy lyrics and there are those aplenty in Jason Mraz's "The Remedy," ("You got's the poison, I got's the remedy) which may be one of my least favorite songs ever. I don't know, though, with such tough competition coming from Sheryl Crow's "All I Wanna Do" and LeeAnne Womack's "I Hope You Dance." Ugh.

Other things I fail to enjoy include meat that is cooked at any tempature less than "well done," escalators, insects that come in close contact with me, hearing the same annoying songs on the radio again and again, network promos for sitcoms that make the sitcoms look like dramas, protests/rallies in which those protesting do things like smash windows or deliberately stop traffic, rides that go upside down, the character of Michelle Tanner on the TV show Full House/other smart-alecky child characters, bill and rent paying and more.

Doesn't that make me sound appealing? I do have likes and interests though, as I have noted above. Listing likes *and* dislikes helps people sound a little more human. Anyway, overall, now you all know a little more about me, so... let me know you found all of that junk out by signing my guestbook or emailing me. Feel free to tell me more about yourself and your pages, etc. And, well....thanks for stopping by.

(Whittaker Chambers, a once "bad" man turned very honorable. Good book, too.)

Well, feel free to let me know you dropped by by leaving your mark in the guestbook below or by sending me an e-mail.

Be sure to tell your opinions, deep thoughts, emotions, etc. Or if that doesn't float your boat, well, how about..

Refuse to send e-mail and you will sink fast. Send me an e-mail and you will be vastly rewarded with hoards of my silly, over-long replies. I know it doesn't sound appealing, but please send something!
