No, I haven't viewed the original version of this movie, but I don't think it's necessary to realize that the collection of actors here are some of today's finest. The plot is somewhat predictable and the all male cast is out-dated, but it works for the sake of the film.
The performances are very strong, powerful, and touching. George C. Scott is one of the strong. He seems larger than life. His gritty voice like sheet metal rolling in the wind. His frustration is felt by all, even if you disagree with him.
Hume Cronyn is so subtle. He is like the weight stopping the film from getting too big for itself. He keeps everything sturdy. He's like the sensitive old man that we hate putting in the nursing home.
Mykelti Williamson is completely unrecognizable from his role as Bubba Blue in Forrest Gump. He has a beard, his hair is different, and his personality is waaaay changed. He has a racist attitude and even in the end, his ignorance is memorable.
Jack Lemmon is almost too sure of himself. The times he is at his finest is when he's all alone in the bathroom looking in the mirror doubting himself. He's an amazing actor and I'll never forget the moment when Ving Rhames handed Jack Lemmon his Golden Globe. It was so touching, there wasn't a dry eye anywhere.
Overall, I liked the movie quite a bit and the final image of Scott walking towards the elevator all alone is still with me. I give 12 Angry Men a B+.
