The previews gave you no clue what this movie was about. Financially, this was bad for the film company that made it because it didn't do well. But for anyone who saw or will see Dark City this is good. Even if you've seen all the previews you're still fresh for the movie.

The director, Alex Proyas (The Crow), does an amazing job of showing the city in which the sun never shines. Buildings rise from the pavement and smash into one another to create a different cityscape everyday. You feel like you're right there sitting on the edge of the building watching this bizarre occurence happen right before your eyes.

The story is complicated, but not so much where you can get lost. John Murdoch (Alex Sewell) wakes up in his bathtub with blood dripping from his forehead. He has no idea of how he got there or who he is. I won't tell you the rest of the story for fear of ruining the joy of discovering it, but it's original. You've never seen nothing like this before.

Rarely does a movie come along that I doubt will be even good enough to watch all the way through, but upon viewing shocks me into putting it in my favorite movie list (it's a lot of movies, but it's difficult to make the cut).

The villanous Strangers seem almost too real. I just know I'm going to have a nightmare with one of these guys chasing me. Somehow, I could feel the coldness of their flesh through the screen. And the damp dark city fits them.

I recommend Dark City to anyone who wants an original film with a lead actor they probably have never even heard of. Sewell will probably never be a big star, but here, he's good. I give this flick a A-.
