Beowulf
An old English poem
Beowulf is one of the greatest epic poems written. I have just finished writing a study guide on it for highschoolers. If you would like more information on the study guide, please e-mail me @ EnglishLitStudies@yahoo.com. On this page I have information on the materials used with the guide.
"Dragon Slayer" by Rosemary Sutcliffe. This title is not currently available at Amazon, but shouldn't be too hard to find from homeschool vendors. "Beowulf" translated by Frederick Rebsamen. This is the main text used. Anuna CD album. This has some lovely early Celtic music that help give a "flavour" of the times. Wagner's Nieblunglied- one of the first recorded times the story of Siegfried is told is in Beowulf. In my study I recommend listening to some of Wagner's opera while reading the account in Beowulf.
I also recommend Shirley Glubok's "Art of the Vikings" and a collection of essays on Beowulf compiled by Donald Fry. Unfortunately, these two are out of print. There are many used book sites online where you might be able to find a copy- and the library, as always, is a wonderful resource.
