The Scarlet Pimpernel

By: Baroness Orczny

This is a truly great story to read about the French Revolution. Although it gets a bit too unrealistic at the end- it is a fun and exciting story of smuggling Aristocrats out of France into Great Britain.

The Scarlet Pimpernel is the nickname for one of the most daring men in all England. Many of Madame Guillotine's victims are lost to this Scarlet Pimpernel. His cunning exploits are known everywhere. Everyone would love to know who he is, but only two or three are privileged, and they are sworn to secrecy.

France is furious at how many are escaping because of him and England is delighted to have such a hero in her midst- if they only knew where, though! J

Marguerite is one of those who would love to know whom the Scarlet Pimpernel is. She is actually French- but married an English gentleman. Her marriage is not doing well, however. She married Lord Percy- the man considered the stupidest man in England. Marguerite is a brilliant young woman who is very unhappy. In France she did something that had a terrible consequence and in England she is married to what she considers a lout.

She used to think that he loved her- but he has changed. Now he is what everybody told her he was, a smiling, simpering simpleton. She wants to make up for what happened in France, but she is trapped by her ridiculous husband and a threatening situation.

Her brother is in desperate trouble and she is the only one who can save him. But does she want to? She loves him dearly, but he would he want her to consent to the terms given in exchange for his life? Finally she decides that she has no other choice. She agrees to find the Scarlet Pimpernel based on some snippets of information.

She does what is asked of her and then realizes with horror that she has condemned the man she loves most in the world to death. She must warn him! But she has to prove herself trustworthy as well. She has failed before, even though she did not mean to- but it happened and she has to work twice as hard now to gain time and trust.

What does she do to accomplish her goal? Does she succeed? Is the Scarlet Pimpernel doomed?

I recommend this book to any girl looking for something to read!
