Jasper Mifflin Westfall and Frances (McCaulley) Westfall

The above picture is a picture of a portrait of my Grandparents Jasper Mifflin Westfall and Frances (McCaulley) Westfall.

My father's father, my grandfather, was Jasper Mifflin Westfall who was born near Roanoke in Lewis County West Virginia Feb. 25,1857. He died on his farm near Fieldon in Jersey County Illinois Dec. 9, 1934. He was the son of Emanuel (1828-1863) and Hannah Kelley Westfall (1837-1918). His father Emanuel Westfall was killed while plowing during the Civil War in 1863 in West Virginia, the year West Virginia split off and became a separate state. After my great grandfather's death his wife Hannah Kelley Westfall, moved with her 2 sons (my grandfather Jasper who was only 6 and his one year old brother Emanuel Jr.) to Bloomington, IL. She may have had relatives in the area.

My grandfather Jasper Mifflin Westfall (1857-1934) and his 2nd wife, my grandmother, Frances (McCaulley) Westfall (1869-1936) were married in 1893. My grandfather Jasper Mifflin Westfall was the son of Emanuel Westfall Sr. who was shot and killed in 1863 by Union Soldiers. My grandfather was only 6 years old when his father Emanuel was killed. His little brother Emanuel Westfall Jr. was only a year and a half when his father Emanuel died. My grandfather Jasper Mifflin Westfall and his 2nd wife Frances (McCaulley) Westfall were the parents of my father Walter Edward “Ed” Westfall (1897-1977), Alonzo “Lonnie” Westfall (1895-1970), Jasper Westfall (1907-1997), Floyd Westfall (1914-1991), Anna (Westfall) Griffin (1904-1992), and Laura (Westfall) Anderson Coleman (1899-1978). My grandfather Jasper Mifflin Westfall was also married previously to Mary Jane Shannon (1859-1940). Jasper Mifflin Westfall and his 1st wife Mary Jane (Shannon) Westfall had 6 daughters---Marietta Westfall (died in infancy in 1879), Stella (Westfall) Beaver ((1881-1960), Mamie (Westfall) Hopkins (1885-1959), Nora (Westfall) Kraushaar (1887-1944), Grace (Westfall) Lentz (1890-1974), and Eva (Westfall) Haag (1893-1978).

In 1878 at the age of 21 my grandfather Jasper Mifflin Westfall married his first wife Mary Jane Shannon. That same year they moved with her parents accompanying to near Coyville, Kansas. It was near the Oklahoma line. He farmed near Coyville, Kansas in the 1880's when he was married to his first wife Mary Jane Shannon. They had 6 daughters-Eva, Nora, Stella, Mamie, Grace, and Marietta who died when a baby.

It was said my grandfather Jasper Mifflin Westfall once went on a cattle drive on the Chisholm Trail. An old family story was that Jesse James once stayed at my grandfather's farm when he was wounded and later came back with a cow and gave the family the cow for helping him. Also it was said my grandfather sometimes wore 2 pearl handled long barreled 44 caliber revolvers in those days.

In about 1886 he and his family went with a team of oxen pulling his wagon from Kansas to W. Virginia where he was born. He lived near Reedyville (now Reedy), W. Virginia in Roane County. At least two of his uncles lived there at the time, and an aunt Merinda sister to his father, having moved there from Lewis County W. Virginia. There in about 1893 after divorcing his first wife Mary Jane Shannon, he met and married my father's mother and my grandmother Frances McCaulley. Shortly after their marriage they then left West Virginia and settled in the Jersey County, IL area about 1893.

My grandfather Jasper Mifflin Westfall married Frances McCaulley in 1893 in West Virginia. She was born 11-16-1869 in West Virginia and died 1-18-1936 at her residence on her farm near Fieldon, Jersey County, IL. They had 4 sons--my father Walter Edward Westfall, Alonzo (Lonnie) Westfall, Jasper Westfall, and Floyd Westfall, and 2 daughters--Laura Westfall, and Anna Westfall.

My father said his father was a stern disciplinarian and once whipped him with a blacksnake whip until his back was bloody because he had disobeyed him. He said his father was a big man and his mother was small woman with red hair. He said his father planted an apple orchard on the hill above the farmhouse and had a large grape arbor. He farmed about 300 acres at one time. My father and his brother Lonnie worked in the field at a young age.

In later years his father sold off most his land. He died in 1934 on the farm after several years of stomach problems. The doctor thought he might have had cancer. My grandmother died just a year later. In January of 1936 she went out barefooted in the middle of the night to put some straw in a pen for a sow with some little pigs and died several days later with Pneumonia. My father's parents are buried in Grimes-Neely Cemetery West of Jerseyville, Illinois.

---------------

My father had 6 half sisters, the children of his father, my grandfather, Jasper Mifflin Westfall (2-25-1857 to 12-9-1934) and his first wife Mary Jane (Shannon) Westfall (3-6-1859 to 1-18-1940). My great grandfather Emanuel Westfall (1828-1963) was killed while plowing during the Civil War in 1863 in West Virginia by Union Soldiers. I don't know the circumstances. He may have been killed by some kind of military action. The Civil War was raging in Virginia at the time, and the state was divided by warring factions. In 1861 West Virginia had split off to become a separate state. It entered the Union in 1863.

After my great grandfather's death his wife Hannah (Kelley) Westfall (1837-1918) moved with her 2 sons (my grandfather Jasper who was only 6 and his one year old brother Emanuel Jr.) to near Bloomington, McLean County, IL. She may have had relatives in the area.

In 1878 at the age of 21 my grandfather Jasper married his first wife Mary Jane Shannon in Bloomington, IL. That same year they moved from Bloomington with Mary Jane's parents, Abraham and Amanda Shannon, accompanying them to near Coyville, Wilson County, Kansas. It was near the Oklahoma line. In about 1886 my grandfather and his family returned to his birth state of West Virginia. He traveled all the way with oxen pulling the wagon. He had relatives in the area. He lived near Reedyville (now Reedy) W. Virginia in Roane County. Two of his uncles and an aunt Merinda had moved to Roane County from Lewis County, West Virginia.

My grandfather divorced his first wife Mary Jane (Shannon) Westfall and married his second wife Frances (McCaulley) Westfall (11-16-1869 to 1-18-1936), my grandmother, in 1893. Soon after their marriage they moved to Jersey County, IL.

His first wife Mary Jane Shannon also remarried. She was born 3-6-1859 in Licking Co., Ohio, and died 1-18-1940 in Alton, Madison Co., IL. She was the daughter of Abraham (9-20-1830 to 11-6-1903) and Amanda (Elban) Shannon (8-2-1840 to 1896). Her father was born in Licking Co. Ohio, and died in Toronto, Woodson Co., Kansas. Her mother was born in Utica, Ohio, and died in Wilson Co., Kansas. Mary Jane Shannon's great grandfather William Shannon was born about 1755 in Ireland, and died in Ohio in the 1840's. Her grandfather William Shannon Jr. was born in PA and died in Ohio and married Mary Jane Gargey in PA. For more information about the Shannon family go here- The Shannon Family

--------------------

My father's half sisters, the daughters of Jasper Mifflin Westfall and Mary Jane (Shannon) were-Marietta who died as a baby (2 months old), Eva and Nora who were raised by his father Jasper Mifflin Westfall (my grandfather) and his second wife (my grandmother), their stepmother, Frances (McCaulley) Westfall, on the farm near Fieldon, Jersey County, IL with my father and his brothers and sisters as he grew up. The other half sisters Mamie, Stella, and Grace were raised by their mother, my grandfather's first wife Mary Jane (Shannon) Westfall in Kansas. She remarried, but her second husband's name is unknown. Stella and Mamie were born in Kansas, and Nora, Grace and Eva were born near Reedyville (now Reedy), Roane County, West Virginia.

Nora married my mother Lovie (Kraushaar) Westfall's Uncle Frank Kraushaar. Eva married Mike Haag. Nora died in 1944 and Eva in 1978. Mamie married S. Lee Hopkins in Kansas and later moved to Alton, IL area. Stella married George Beaver and they lived in the Kansas and Oklahoma area, though they did live in the Alton, IL area for a time. Grace married Henry Lentz and lived in the Kansas area.

Both Eva and Nora lived with their father after he divorced his 1st wife Mary Jane (Shannon) Westfall. The other 3 daughters, Stella, Mamie, and Grace stayed with their mother in Kansas. I'm not sure why Eva and Nora came to live with their father and the other girls stayed with their mother. Mary Jane (Shannon) Westfall remarried after the divorce to Alfred T. Row. My father said Eva and Nora were a great help to his mother in helping to cook and prepare meals for the family and a number of hired hands that my grandfather Westfall employed to work on the farm and in the timber. My grandfather hired men to help cut railroad ties and stave bolts in the timber in the wintertime, and haul them to a river town in Grafton, Illinois on wagons to be sold and loaded onto river barges.

On this page I will give you what information I have about their families.

Henry Moisten Lentz's father Daniel Lentz was a carpenter and built houses and cabinets, and he and his son Franklin also built coffins during the diphtheria epidmic in 1894 when Daniel's mother Catherine Lentz died and 3 of his children died from diphtheria. Daniel Lentz died 7-9-1902 from a fire in his home. He had started a fire to cook breakfast and caught his clothes on fire. The fire quickly spread to the curtains and walls. Daniel's brother George was visiting at the time and he roused the children and got them out of the house, and managed to put the fire out saving part of the house, but Daniel later died of severe burns and smoke inhalation. Daniel Lentz and other Lentz family members are buried in the Abbyville Cemetery which is located 1/2 mile south on Hodge Road from Highway 50. (1xx) Andrew and Catherine (Heit) Lentz's son Charles L. Lentz was born in 1861 in Iowa, and died in Kansas. He married Mary Steffy. Charles and Mary (Steffy) Lentz had a son Fred Sherman Lentz born in Kansas who was locally famous as a race-car driver. Fred Lentz was born September 5, 1885 about fifteen miles southwest of Hutchinson in Westminster Township, Reno County, Kansas. He was the eldest of three known children born to Charles L. Lentz and Mary A. (Steffy) Lentz. Fred was married first c1908 to Blanche L. Burnett (1889-1913) and they made their home at Plevna, Kansas. Fred and Blanche were the parents of two daughters: Frances N. (Lentz) Knote Harland (1909-?) and Leota Nancy (Lentz) Iverson (1910-1952). Fred was married second to May Cooper on June 29, 1914 in Wichita, Kansas. No children were born to this union which ended in divorce c1928. Fred was married third before 1938 to Florence A. (Wright) Steward (1901-1967). He worked first as a “driver” for the N. E. Williams & Son grocery store in downtown Hutchinson. He then operated his own livery business and a two-car jitney cab service (that utilized Fords) in Hutchinson in 1915. Next, he opened the Auto Hospital, an auto repair business in the garage at his home at 529 W. Sherman in Hutchinson before becoming a mechanic at the Class A Garage at 610 N. In 1926, Fred was the proprietor of the Silver Moon café in Hutchinson. In 1919, Fred tried to purchase a new Buick from a dealership in Hutchinson. He was told that, due to a railway car shortage, they were unable to receive any shipments from the factory. Fred drove to Flint, Michigan, got his new Buick there, and drove it home himself. Fred began racing cars on half-mile dirt racetracks around the Midwest. Lentz won four feature races at the Kansas State Fairgrounds in Hutchinson between 1921 and 1925 which currently places him in a twenty-three way tie for fifty-first place on the All-Time Feature Race Winners List at that racetrack. He had held that record by himself for eleven years from 1923 until 1934. Lentz had received several traffic tickets and both he and his second wife were convicted for various bootlegging activities throughout the 1920s. In 1927, he was charged with the theft of seventy-five men’s suits from the Lantz Clothing Co. in Lyons, Kansas and trying to trade them in Kansas City for sixty gallons of alcohol. Lentz was convicted and appealed his case all the way to the Kansas Supreme Court. His conviction stood and Lentz began serving his nineteen-month sentence in the Kansas State Penitentiary at Lansing in July of 1929. In 1938, Fred and his new wife, Florence Lentz, moved first to Kinsley, Kansas and then on to a home at 914 Morton St. in Great Bend, Kansas in 1940. They owned and operated a restaurant and Fred also took a job as a mechanic for the local International Harvester dealer, Gibson, Titus & Stafford, Inc. By 1947, he was working as a mechanic at Spruill Motors, Inc. in Great Bend. In 1943, Fred was charged with fellow Great Bend restaurateur, Harry D. King, with possession of stolen government property by selling food in their restaurants that had been stolen from a nearby Army Air Base. Lentz, King, and some soldiers were all convicted in that case in 1944. Fred was burning trash behind his home on Labor Day of 1952 when he tossed a partially full aerosol paint can into the fire. The can exploded showering him with flaming trash and he was seriously burned. Almost six weeks later, while still in the Great Bend hospital recovering from those injuries, he suffered a heart attack and passed away on October 15, 1952. He is buried in the Great Bend Cemetery at Great Bend, Kansas. Florence passed away at Great Bend on June 23, 1967 and is buried in the Mt. Hope Cemetery at Enterprise, Kansas.
