John G. Hewitt

John G. Hewitt was born 10-12-1840 in East St. Louis, St. Clair County, IL, and died 6-25-1923 in Otter Creek Township, Jersey County, IL. He is buried at White Cemetery, Otter Creek Township, Jersey County, IL. He was the son of Eliphalet and Martha (Stites) Hewitt Sr. His father Eliphalet Hewitt Sr. was born in 1804 in NY or PA, and died in 1870 in Jersey County, IL. His mother Martha Gelispe Stites was born in 1806 or 1809 in NJ or Hamilton County, Ohio and died 4-6-1856 in Jersey County, IL. (Another source says her maiden name was Gillespie), (A tombstone in Jersey Co. reads Martha wife of E. Hewitt, died 1856, aged 47). She was the daughter of Jonathan Benjamin Stites born Nov. 18, 1774 in Ohio and died Feb. 26, 1855 in Jefferson Co., Indiana and Elizabeth Lawrence born Aug, 25, 1777, died 1864. Martha's father Jonathon Benjamin Stites was the son of Henry Stites & Lydia (Osborn) Stites. Eliphalet Hewitt Sr. was possibly a son of Shamgar Hewitt born 1-29-1750, and Rachel Smith. They were married 2-10-1788 in Cape May Co., NJ. Shamgar Hewitt was a Revolutionary War Soldier. Shamgar Hewitt was a son of Joseph Hewitt (born 1714) and Phebe Leonard. Eliphalet Hewitt Sr. was also a possible descendant of Captain Thomas Hewitt of Stonington CT who was born 1630 in England or Ireland. He died 1662 in the sea. So far as is known from reliable sources, Thomas Hewitt, who was a seafaring man, was the first person of the Hewitt name that made Stonington his abiding place. The first we know of him is from the diary of Thomas Miner, Sr., who speaks of him as in command of his vessel in Mystic River in the year 1656, where he was receiving the surplus products of the early planters here, in exchange for Boston goods. In his business transactions he made the acquaintance of Walter Palmer, whose daughter, Hannah Palmer, he married April 26, 1659. In order to make Stonington his abode for life he purchased a tract of land on the east side of Mystic River. The land embraced the present site of the Elm Grove Cemetery in Stonington, CT, on which he erected a dwelling house of primitive dimensions, pending which he continued his coastal trade, extending his business to the West Indies. During the year 1662 he purchased a cargo of neat stock, sheep and poultry, designed for the West Indies market, with which he set sail for that place, expecting a pleasant voyage and successful exchange of his cargo for goods in merchandise suitable for the inhabitants of this region round about. Months and years passed, and no glad tidings came of his safe arrival in the West Indies, nor any trace of him anywhere, which forced the conclusion upon his wife and friends, that amid some fearful storm, his vessel had foundered and all on board had found a grave in the cold, dark, heaving sea. Captain Thomas Hewitt's descendant Nathaniel Hewitt born circa 1746 might also have possibly been an ancestor of Eliphalet Hewitt Sr. Eliphalet Hewitt Sr. may have possibly been a son of Eliphalet Hobart Hewitt, son of Nathaniel Hewitt and Anna Hobart, who was born 7 Aug 1767 In Stonington, Connecticut, and his 2nd wife Mary Burrows.)
