Harold and Freda (Lentz) Ralston's daughter Carole A. (Ralston) Boyle's obituary - Carole A. (Ralston) Boyle of Wichita, formerly of Hutchinson, passed away on Saturday December 29th, 2018 after a brief but brave fight with CNS lymphoma. She was with family and loved ones. She is preceded in death by her parents, Freda (Sandy) Ralston and Harold Ralston and her brother, Richard Ralston. Surviving family members include her daughter, Marisa (Boyle) Newfelt and son in law Chris Newfelt, both of Wichita. She also leaves behind nieces, nephews, cousins and lifelong family friends that she loved dearly. Carole was born on Friday, October 18,1946 in Hutchinson, Kansas. Three days before her 6th birthday, she was taken to the hospital, gravely ill. She woke up on her 6th birthday, paralyzed from the neck down, stricken with Polio during the epidemic of 1952. After months of treatment and physical therapy, she regained the use of all but her legs. This never slowed her down, however. Over the span of her very full life, she graduated from Hutchinson High School, class of 1965 and obtained her associates degree with a major in music from Hutchinson Community College. She would be married and divorced twice, travel all over the U.S. and visit Mexico, go skiing, chase hot air balloons with the Kansas Highwinders and eventually get to fly in one, have a baby (although she was told she was unable), meet celebrities and attend many, many concerts. She loved watching movies and going out to eat with friends and family. She also carried a deep passion for music of all kinds. Carole will be remembered as a spontaneous, fun-loving, free spirit. She was kind-hearted and generous. She loved spending time with people and always had a smile on her face. She could make just about anyone's bad day, good. Her presence is greatly missed, but her family and loved ones find solace in the knowledge that she is in Heaven, free from the physical disabilities she had on Earth. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 8, 2019 at Memorial Park Cemetery, 5905 W. 4th Ave., Hutchinson, Kansas. All are welcome. A memorial service will be held in Wichita, date and location to be determined. Condolences may be left for the family at www.bakerfhvc.com.

(Note: Stephen M. Reddish and his housekeeper Rachel Cisco were murdered in Stephen Reddish's home in Jersey County, IL the night of April 25 or early morning of April 26. 1919. His son Dr. Horace A. Reddish, was accused and eventually acquitted of the murder of his father. Here are some newspaper articles about the murder and trial. -------- Newspaper Article, Stephen M Reddish & Rachel Cisco, Jersey County, IL - Sheriff Jas. Catt and State's Attorney Paul M. Hamilton,of Jersey county, IL, are investigating the mysterious murder of Stephen M. Reddish 85 years old, wealthy land owner of Jerseyville, and Mrs. Rachel Cisco, Negro servant in the household, who were found shot to death yesterday afternoon in the Reddish home. The bodies were discovered by Clarence G. Reddish, cashier of the Jersey State Bank, and son of the dead man. After a search for more than 24 hours, following the failure of the elder Reddish to answer a telephone call. He believed his father was visiting in St. Louis, and it was not until yesterday noon that the son decided to visit the home. Upon entering the house through a raised window, Clarence made his way to the second floor, where he found his father lying in his bed clad in his night clothes, with a bullet through his head. The woman was lying on the floor in a rear room. There was evidence of a struggle. She had several bullet wounds in the head and body. At a Coroner's inquest held yesterday by Deputy Coroner Dr. F. G. Warner of Grafton, Clarence Reddish testified the last time he saw his father was Friday, April 25, 1919. On Monday he said, he went to the home of his father and found the house locked. He found a kitchen window open and entered. He did not suspect anything wrong at the time, he testified , thinking the servant had gone to her home and that his father was in St. Louis. The wife of the dead man at the time of the murder was in St Louis under the care of a physician , and was accompanied there by her son, Dr. Horrace Reddish, who had been making his home with his parents. Clarence testified that he was again at the house Tuesday, The mail of his father, deposited since Saturday, was in the box on the porch, indicating, he stated, that the double killing must have taken place some time Friday night, The motive for the crime is yet undetermined. A steel box in which Reddish kept his papers had been tampered with. It is believed his father had very little money in the house, and that the Negro woman had about $100 in her room.

May 14, 1919. Jerseyville, May 14 - Prosecution of Dr. Horace A. Reddish will proceed immediately, State's Attorney Hamilton says. Dr. Reddish will be tried for the murder of his father Stephan Reddish, wealthy retired farmer and his negro maid, found dead in the Reddish home here April 30. Hamilton declared he had sufficient evidence to hold Reddish for the grand-jury. A special grand jury session to pry into the murder mystery may be called, he indicated. Reports were circulated here today that Clarence Reddish, brother of the accused, should be able to clear him of suspicion. No details of the information of Clarence Redish was made public.

June 11, 1919. Stephen M. Reddish was alive and on the streets of Jerseyville, Saturday morning, April 26, according to testimony given by Ira W. Day, a garage proprietor, at the preliminary hearing of Reddish's son, Dr. Horace A. Reddish, who is accused of murdering his father. The theory has been that Stephen Reddish was murdered the night of April 25 or early morning of April 26. Dr. Reddish offered as an alibi that he spent the night of April 25 at the home of John W. Mackelden in St. Louis and that he was in bed at the Mackelden home until 5:45 am, April 26. In an effort to break down this alibi, the prosecution had suggested that it would have been possible for Dr. Reddish to go from St. Louis to Jerseyville and return to St. Louis to go back to bed at the Mackelden home before 5:45 a.m. Day had told before of having driven Stephen Reddish home in his automobile, arriving there before midnight April 25, but his statement as to seeing him the next morning was first made known at today's hearing. "Did you ever see Stephen Reddish after taking him home the night of April 25?," he was asked. "Yes, I saw him the next morning in front of the bank building talking with Calvin Carroll." One of the principal witnesses at yesterday's hearing was the brother of Dr. Reddish, Clarence G. Reddish, cashier of the Jersey State Bank.

July 19, 1919. Attorneys for Dr. Horace A. Reddish, Jerseyville physician held in the jail at Jerseyville on a charge of murdering his father, Stephen M. Reddish, have started a movement to have him released on bond.

September 27, 1919. Dr. Horace A. Reddish of Jerseyville was indicted by the Jersey county grand jury yesterday for the murder of his father, Stephen M. Reddish, a wealthy Jersey county land owner, and Mrs. Rachel Cisco, negro housekeeper for Reddish. John W. Mackelden, until recently of St. Louis and now in New York, was indicted jointly with Dr. Reddish on the same charge, on indictment each being returned on the two charges. Mackelden's wife is a sister of Reddish's mother. The bodies of Stephen M. Reddish and his housekeeper were found in the Reddish home April 30 and on May 5 Dr. Reddish was arrested in Alton. Since then he has been confined in the county jail at Jerseyville. His preliminary hearing was not held until June 10 and lasted three days, resulting in his being held to the grand jury on a murder charge.

Reddish, physician and heir to a large estate in Jersey county, Illinois, and his wife were taken into custody today by police after they were found living in squalor in a local hotel room. Their son, Hubert, 14, was taken from them and the authorities will endeavor to have him removed from his parents/ care on the ground that they are narcotic addicts. Seven years ago Dr. Reddish was acquitted in Jacksonville, Ill., of the charge of murdering his wealthy father, Stephen M. Reddish, who was mysteriously shot to death in his home near Jerseyville. Since then the family has lived in several places. Mrs. Reddish has been soliciting alms at the Union station here, police said.

The Edwardsville Intelligencer Tuesday, July 26, 1927 Edwardsville, Illinois. Dr. Horace A. Reddish, Madison Hotel, 1831 Market street, St. Louis, formerly of Jerseyville, was bound over for action of the federal grand jury yesterday by United States Commissioner Atkins on charges of purchasing and possessing narcotics. Dr. Reddish was arrested June 29 in his hotel room by E. F. Griesser, a patrolman, who saw him obtain a package from a negro at Fourteenth street and Franklin avenue. An examination of the package, according to the government's information, revealed that it contained morphine. In his defense, Dr. Reddish admitted the package contained drugs, but contended the seizure was made without a search warrant and was illegal. His contention was overruled by Commissioner Atkins, who bound him over for action of the grand jury. He was released on bond of $1,000. In January of this year the police found Dr. Reddish and his wife and 14 year old son living in destitute circumstances at the Madison Hotel, despite the fact he had an income of $50 a week from his father's estate. In 1919 he was tried and acquitted for the murder of his father.

Benjamin's mother lived here with him until her death in 1853. She is buried in what is called Armstrong cemetery, in English township. Benjamin was married on the 30th of Oct. in 1850 to Ann Eliza Reddish, born Jan. 10 1831 in what is now Jersey county. She is the daughter of Stephen and Sallied Reddish. Mr. and Mrs. Dunham have been the parents of 14 children, 11 whom are living: Henry C., born Aug. 30, 1851; John, born May 8, 1853, died March 18, 1873; Walker, born Aug. 2, 1854; Juliette, born Feb. 28, 1856; Virginia Ann, born April 22, 1857, died June 24, 1869; Stephen A. Dougles, born June 11, 1858; Emmer, born Dec. 3, 1859; Lloyd, born March 30, 1861; an unnamed infant born Sept. 25, 1862, died Mary 3, 1863; Benjamin F., born Jan. 20, 1864; Charles H., born Feb. 6, 1866; Oscar, born Oct. 16, 1867; Oliver P., born Nov. 18, 1869; Hattie Belle, born Sept. 8, 1871. Mr. Dunham's farm at first contained 40 acres, but he has added to this until it now contains 213 acres, and on this he built a new residence in 1884. He raises stock, as well as grain. The extent of improvements on his and neighboring farms may be seen by comparing the present condition with what it was when he first located there. It was then a wild country, with deer and wild game to be found in abundance. He has seen as many as 15 deer at one time, and has killed numbers of them. The last one killed in this neighborhood was shot by him, it being in among the sheep. He has also killed great numbers of wild turkeys and other choice species of game, which were then more plentiful than the most common kinds now are. It is difficult to imagine the changes that have taken place in that time, but Mr. Dunham, in the half-century that he has spent here, has witnessed its transformation from a wilderness to a continued series of cultivated fields and the homes of hundreds. In those early days, like other pioneers, he had to haul his grain to a mill and grind it himself, with his own team.
