The widowed Marie, with six young children (the oldest about 17 and the youngest just 3) sailed from Havre, France on the ship Ocean Home on May 18, 1854, and arrived nearly two months later in New Orleans. They made their way up the Mississippi to the St. Louis area, and after about a year, were brought to Calhoun County, Illinois by Antoine Degerlia. About four years after she arrived in America, Marie married her second husband, Dennis Langevin on November 9, 1858. They had no children. (Note: Here is a biography of John Paul Godar and and his wife Mary Amanda (Degerlia) Godar - PAUL GODAR - Among the many industrious and reliable men who are gaining a Maintenance by tilling a portion of the soil of Cahoun County, is Paul Godar, whose land is favorably located on section 11, Hardin precinct. Mr. Godar is quite an old settler, his residence in the county extending over a period of nearly forty years, during which he has witnessed great changes in the appearance of the country, a large increase in population and a corresponding increase in the appliances of civilized life. He has born his part manfully in the duties that were presented to him as a public citizen and a private individual, and it affords his many friends great pleasure to know that he is meeting with success in his chosen vocation. Our subject is the second son born to John and Magdalene Godar, and opened his eyes to the light of day November 1, 1838, in the romantic land of Switzerland. He received what might be called a Preliminary education, persuing his studies in the French language, which was that of his fathers, and by persistent reading has added much knowledge to the foundation obtained in school. He now has a fair understanding of the English language, which he has gained since he came to America.

In 1853 our subject, accompanied by his mother and other members of the family, his father having died several years before, took passage at Harve on a sailing vessel and after a tedious voyage of almost two months, disembarked at New Orleans, whence they came up the river to a point not far from St. Louis, Mo. After sojourning there about a twelvemonth, they came on to Calhoun County, Ill., where they were living when our subject attained to his majority. A few years later, he took to himself a wife in the person of Mary Dejerlia [sic], with whom his marriage rites were celebrated October 1, 1863. Mrs. Godar is the daughter of Anton and Virginia Dejerlia, formerly residents in Hardin Precint, who are now deceased. The present landed estate of our subject comprises eighty broad and fertile acres, which under his intelligent and careful handling yield abundantly of the cereals which are sown thereon, the crops being excellent in quality as well. The land has been supplied with all needed improvements and everything is kept up in good shape. Mrs. Godar also owns a considerable amount of land, which is operated by her husband.

As a School Director, Mr. Godar has been serving for a number of years in an ernest and efficient manner. Realizing the value of education and of modern improvements, he takes a part in the projects which will promulgate a better understanding or higher life among the citizens, and is recognized as a man of public spirit, intelligence and good character. His religious membership is in the Roman Catholic Church and his political adherence is given to the Democratic party. To Mr. and Mrs. Godar ten sons and daughters have come, but they have been called upon to part with the youngest, Frederick. Those who are still living bear the respective names of Paul Francis, William D., Benjamin F., Dorathy Alice, James Edward, Clara R., Lucy E., Julia E., and John Alfred. They have received as thorough an education as circumstances would admit of and been taught the way of thrift and prudence.)

More Godar family history information about John Leopold (Paul) Gaudard (Godar) - Paul Godar and his five siblings were born in the village of Semsales, in the Catholic and mainly French-speaking Canton of Fribourg. His ancestors had lived for centuries around the Moleson mountain, in the southeast corner of Fribourg and not far from Lake Geneva. His parents Jean (John) Gaudard and wife Marie Madeleine were parents of six children, four boys and two girls. The story goes that Jean journeyed to Italy where he became ill and died. Madeleine and the six children sailed from LaHavre, France on the ship "Ocean Home". They reached New Orleans on May 18, 1854. There were 291 passengers on board, including people from Germany, Switzerland, and France. Passengers 122 through 128 were: Gaudard, Madeleine, 34 " Alfred 17 " Paul 15 " Seraphine 12 " Marie 9 "Leon 7 " Louis 1/12. Godar family historian, Tony Pregaldin, provided this information and most of the records dealing with the Godars. He said that Madeleine's age was understated by 7 years on the passenger list and even more on her passport. Also that Louis was really three years old at the time of the voyage. Included on the trip was a Gottuey family, also from Semsales. They too, migrated to Calhoun County. The spelling of their name was changed to Gotway. Jean-Leopold Gaudard was called "Paul" at an early age as noted on the passenger list of the ship "Ocean Home" on arrival in America. Early on the spelling of the surname was changed to "Godar" which is close to the way Gaudard was pronounced. -Fred A. Godar, grandson. John Paul Godar's wife Mary Amanda (DeGerlia) Godar was the daughter of Antoine “Anthony” DeJarlais DeGerlia, Jr. born 17 Aug 1802 in Florissant, St. Louis County, Missouri, and died Aug 1861 (aged 58–59) in Calhoun County, Illinois. Burial: French Cemetery, Hardin, Calhoun County, Illinois. Antoine DeGerlia was the son of Antoine DeJarlais/DeGerlia (1769-1850) and his second wife, Therese Pelletier (1774-1819). Antoine (Jr.) was born in St. Ferdinand de Florissant in the Louisiana Territory on 17 Aug 1802. He was baptized there on 12 Sep 1802. At that time, the land was still owned by France, and it was more than a year-and-a-half before the Lewis and Clark Expedition would begin their famous 1804 journey. Antoine married Eugenia "Eugenie" Marc/Mark (LaMar) (1805-1857) on 27 Feb 1823 in a civil ceremony. The marriage was later validated at the Cathédrale Saint-Louis, Roi de France, now known as the Cathedral-Basilica of Saint Louis or, more commonly, as the Old Cathedral. St. Louis was founded by French fur trappers in 1764. Antoine's father and a few others made their way from Canada to an area located north of St. Louis. Several families, including Antoine and Eugenie DeGerlia, eventually crossed the Mississippi River near Portage des Sioux and settled in Calhoun County, Illinois in the early 1800's. Antoine's parents were among the earliest white settlers in Calhoun County. His mother died there in 1819, soon after their arrival. Antoine and his wife, Eugenie, established a farm in Calhoun County. They were the parents of 9 or 10 children. Eugenie died in 1857. Antoine died 4 years after his wife in the late summer of 1861. He was about 59-years-old at the time of his death. Antoine “Anthony” DeJarlais DeGerlia, Jr. and Eugenia "Eugenie" Marc/Mark (LaMar) Godar were the parents of these children-Theodore DeGerlia (1826-1892); Celeste Marc DeGerlia; Frederick DeGerlia (1834-1862); Judith DeGerlia Breden (1834-1879); Juliana Marc DeGerlia; Augustus DeGerlia; Mary A. DeGerlia Godar (1846-1922); Antoine DeGerlia; Edward DeGerlia; and Albert DeGerlia. Antoine, Jr.'s siblings: Therese (DeJarlais) DeGerlia (half-sister) (1796–1850); Celeste Eleanor (DeJarlais) DeGerlia; Victoire (DeJarlais) DeGerlia; (Unknown Son) (DeJarlais) DeGerlia; Albert (DeJarlais) DeGerlia; Joseph (DeJarlais) DeGerlia; Angelique (DeJarlais) DeGerlia (Unknown Son) (DeJarlais) DeGerlia; Cecile (DeJarlais) DeGerlia; Charles (DeJarlais) DeGerlia; and Helene (DeJarlais) DeGerlia. He was the son of Antoine DeJarlais DeGerlia (1769-1850) and Therese Pelletier DeGerlia (1774-1819). Gravesite Details The original name, DeJarlais, was spelled a variety of different ways over the years. Most, but not all, members of the family used the DeGerlia spelling eventually.

(Note: More historical genealogical information about John Paul Godar's wife Mary Amanda (DeGerlia) Godar's Degerlia family - French Pioneer Settlers of Calhoun County - HAPPY BIRTHDAY CALHOUN 1825 – 1975 - By Elois G. Simon - Perhaps it’s because they were here first and have been around so long. . . . but the French who were the pioneer settlers of Calhoun County have received only scant mention in the various accounts that have been written concerning early Calhoun. They have more or less been lumped off with the Indians as people with unpronounceable names, large families and a tendency to hang on to the land cleared by their ancestors. Whatever the reason we have decided that now is the time to let Calhoun and all of our readers know about the “French Connection”. The following information comes from our cousin, Attorney Anton J. Pregaldin of St. Louis, who has devoted much of his lifetime compiling the history of the French families. He is presently engaged in writing a history of the French families of St. Louis. His research has taken him to France, Belgium and Switzerland, and of course Canada. The following in his words, supplemented by us, is an account of: “The DeGerlia Family –from Belgium to Canada—to Missouri—to Calhoun County. The settlement of Calhoun County began soon after 1800, no doubt because it was so easily accessible, both by the Illinois and the Mississippi rivers. Some of the earliest settlers were French families from St. Louis, Florissant and St. Charles, Missouri, and among these were the DeGerlias, who were of French Canadian origin. Several members of this family came to the St. Louis area at different times in the late 18th century. Although we do no know specifically why the DeGerlias came here, we can assume that Antoine DeGerlia (our great-great-great-great-grandfather) his brother Paul, sister Marie Anne, and their two cousins, Charles and Eloi had no inviting prospects in Canada and came to this remote region in the hope of finding greater opportunities. Antoine DeGerlia was the great-grandson of Jean Jacques DeGerlias, born about 1643; died 1722; a native of Liege, Belgium and the younger son of a landowner there, Ferdinand DeGerlias, Seigneur des Hameteaux. Jean Jacques DeGerlia, Sieur de-St. Amant, came to Canada in 1665 as a soldier of the Company de La Foville, a regiment of Carignan Sallieres. Subsequently the regiment disbanded in Canada, and many of its members married French Canadian girls and stayed in North America. Antoine found a wife in Jeanne Trudel, the Canadian-born daughter of a French father and a Belgian mother. They received a land grant at Riviere du Loup, near Trois Rivieres, where they spent the rest of their lives. (In the 19th century the town was renamed Louiseville, in honor of Queen Victoria’s daughter, Louise, whose husband was Govenor-General of Canada.) All DeGerlias, DeSherlias, living today are descended from the youngest child of this couple, who was the only one of their three sons to continue the name. The wedding of Antoine and Jeanne Trudel took place in the parish of the Guardian Angel near Quebec. His bride was the daughter of Jean and Margurite Thomas Trudel. The bridegroom’s mother bore the maiden name of Dorothee Cona. According to custom the practical French DeGerlias and Trudels made a marriage contract, in order to determine rights of inheritance, the bride’s dowry and similar property questions. This contract still exists in the Judicial Archives of Quebec, and from it we learn that the Trudels were generous to their eldest child. They promised to provide furniture of the value of 5,000 livres at the father’s death off the top of his estate. Late in 1668 they young couple left the bride’s parental home to establish their own home near Louiseville. According to the bride’s receipt notes, her dowry consisted of: 2 cows, 2 calves, one of which was used to pay for their transportation by boat to Louiseville, 3 pigs, one large and two small, 24 minots of wheat which the Jesuits had given Antoine at Trois Rivieres and which the Trudels had brought back to Quebec for him. 1 mattress of coarse cloth, 1 quilt, 1 old quilt, 1 pair of sheets, 2 pewter dishes, 2 plates and a half dozen spoons, 2 saddle bags, 1 frying pan, 1 gridiron, an axe and a hoe, a hook, a trunk, table linen, tablecloths, embroidered napkins and ordinary napkins, a churn and a half dozen buckets. 2 cooking pots, one the gift of Monsieur Mores, a suit of clothes purchased for 35 livres from Corporal LaMarche, 2 fine shirts, a camisole, a pair of mittens, a pair of stockings, 2 pairs of French shoes, a set of underwear of fine cloth, some ribbon, a gold ring from the bride’s mother. The couple’s first child was born in 1673, six years after the marriage. There were ten children in all, that we know of, of whom four died as children. The youngest of all, Jean Francois DeGerlias was born in 1699, 32 years after his parents’ marriage, and was the only one of their three sons to carry on the DeGerlias name, but he did so very adequately, with six daughters and eight sons, one of whom, Charles, was the father of Antoine DeGerlias, Sr., of Hardin. An older son, Jean Jacques DeGerlias, Antoine, who was born apparently in the 1680’s or early 1690’s is the first Antoine DeGerlia, but there has been one in each generation from that time until the death of Anton DeGerlia of Hardin in 1956 finally broke the chain. Despite the harsh life they must have lived on the Canadian frontier, Jean Jacques DeGerlias and Jeanne Trudel DeGerlias were stalwart people indeed, both living unusually long lives for that period. He died December 1722 at the age of 79, his wife died 21 years later in December 1743 at the age of 87. Antoine DeGerlia, who was born in Canada in 1769 and who died in Calhoun County in 1850, was living in Florissant, Mo., in the early 1790’s. In 1795 he married Therese Gagne in Florissant. She died the following year, after giving him a daughter, Therese, who married Michael Fortin in 1815, and was the ancestor of a member of South Calhoun people, including the late, Mrs. Sarah Arnold, the Navarre family, the Desrosiers family, and one branch of the Richeys. In 1797, Antoine DeGerlia married a second wife at Florissant. She was Therese Pelletier, born of French Canadian parents at Vincennes, Ind., (In 1828, Antoine DeGerlia married a third wife, in Calhoun County, Angelique Calve (Calvey). She was apparently a widow with grown children. Antoine and his second wife Therese Pelletier apparently stayed around Florissant for the first years of their marriage, and then settled in Calhoun County. They had a total of 9 children, who grew up, plus at least one and probably more who died in childhood. Many descendents of this couple still live in Calhoun County, in Jersey County, in the Alton area and in St. Louis. The children who grew up were: 1- (Celeste) (Mrs. Andre St. Germain) (b.1798; d.?) 2. - Victoire (Mrs. Pierre Lemay, later Mrs. Thomas Jourdan) (b. 1799; d. ?) 3. – Antoine.. (our great grandfather) who married Eugenie Lamar, the mother of his children and in later life after her death, Sophie Roussel; 4. – Albert (b. 1804; d. ?) who married three times. His wives were: Sophia St. Germain, Agnes Calve and Mrs. Rachel (Johnson) Carpentier (Carpunkey), 5. – Angelique (1807-1840) (Mrs. Ciprien (also Ziprien) Lamar, later Mrs. Simon Sel) 6. – Joseph (b. 1810; d. ?) (Kidnapped by Indians, more about him later) 7. – Cecile (b. 1813; d. 188?) (Mrs. Peter Calve) 8. – Charles (b. 1814; d. ?) who married first Mary Peeler, then Rhoda Dewey, and finally Elizabeth Lewis; and 9. – Helene (b. 1818; d. 1850-60) (Mrs. Valentina Senatz). Most of these people left descendents in Calhoun County. Aunty “Betsy” Victoire Jourdain seems to have been a formidable woman and somewhat ahead of her time as a “women’s libber.” According to family tradition she went to the court house to get a license to marry the considerably younger Thomas Jourdain and was highly incensed when the clerk refused to sell her one, expressing willingness however, to sell Tom Jourdain a license to marry her. Her brother, Joseph DeGerlia, was likewise ahead of his time, something of a drop-out. Various versions of the story exist. The more popular one that he was kidnapped by Indians as a child; the other that he left home as a teenager because of family objection to his interest in marriage with a step-sister, who later became the bride of his brother, Albert. Joe went West where he was captured by Indians and eventually adopted into the tribe. After about 24 years he returned to Calhoun briefly, but then took off again, marrying Louisa Ray in Kansas City in 1855 and settling in Kansas. During the Civil War he was hanged and very nearly killed by Quantrill’s raiders, who were trying, unsuccessfully to make him turn over the proceeds from the sale of a farm. Antoine DeGerlia, Jr., was one the first settlers of Hardin. He came to Calhoun with his father Antoine DeGerlia Sr., in the very early 1800’s. They were in the Deer Plain area very early. Almost as early as the first reported, first permanent settler O’Neal, the hermit also, despite his Irish sounding name, a Frenchman. The DeGerlias had for the most part, moved out the Deer Plain area to the French Hollow community North of Hardin as early as 1808. O’Neal, according to written accounts arrived and settled near the present site of the Golden Eagle ferry in 1801. Antoine and his first wife, Eugenie Lamar are buried in the old French Cemetery near the Hardin bridge. The sills from their former home in French Hollow are incorporated in the house inhabited for many years by their grandson, and our father, the late John A. Godar. The original house, a palatial two story building provided shelter for all who needed it. It was here that Jesuits said the first Mass to be celebrated in Calhoun County. Marriages were performed and children were baptized on the rare occasions when one or more of the Jesuit fathers would stop for a day or so. One of the early settlers was Ziprien Lamar who died as a young man in 1831, leaving his widow Angelique, 2 daughters, (the daughters became Eleonore Calve and Pelaqie Tavernier) and a son, Ziprien. Angelique was the sister of Antoine DeGerlia and her husband Ziprien was the brother of Antoine’s wife, Eugenie. Following the death of his father, the young Ziprien, father of Calhoun Herald Editor, Charles Lamar was brought up by Antoine and Eugenie. Like his father, Antoine, Jr., speculated very much in real estate in St. Louis, Peoria and Calhoun. He apparently ran a store and trading post and supplied wood for the packet boats from timber cleared from the land. He acquired land in French Hollow and at one time owned south as far as the site of the old Hardin High School, including the land on which Calhoun High School now stands. In the 1850 federal census it is recorded that he ???? real worth $15,000, by far the largest amount reported by any resident of Calhoun at that time. Land in the French Hollow neighborhood was acquired gradually. Much of it is still owned by direct descendents of Antoine DeGerlia. Land grants signed by President James K. Polk dated 1844, 1847, and 1848, account for part of the land. In 1972 Centennial farm awards were made to these descendants of Antoine and Eugeine DeGerlia, Stephen Godar, Leslie Brenden, Ralph Godar, Peter W. Simon and myself – (Elois G. Simon). Antoine’s children who lived to adulthood were: Theodore and Frederick DeGerlia, Marie Godar and Judith Breden. . . who left numerous descendents in the Hardin area. Ten other children died young. EDITOR’S NOTE – Dear Reader, we do not wish to burden you with the story of one family. On the other hand you must admit it rounds out the History of Calhoun and is a portion of that History until now left blank. As far as we are concerned it serves a two-fold purpose: That of documenting the story of the first settlers of Calhoun County while providing information and data for all the many relatives we’ve been promising it to year after year. The following is more specific information concerning the origins of all, or most of the French families of Calhoun County. John Alfred Godar, Sr.'s wife Nellie Lee (Devine) Godar's grandfather James Herman Devine was born Dec. 20, 1840 in Jefferson Co., Kentucky, and died Oct. 11, 1901 in Calhoun Co., IL. His burial was at Indian Creek Cemetery, Hamburg, Calhoun Co., IL. James Devine became a soldier on the Union side in the Civil War. The discharge paper stated that he was five feet seven inches high, fair complexion, blue eyes and light hair. It also stated that he was "by occupation, when enrolled, a calker". According to his discharge and copies of request for pension, he received a disability discharge due to sunstroke on 29 July 1865 at Galveston, Texas.

Actually, the whole 97th Regiment was mustered out on the 29 July 1865 at Galveston from copies of The Adjutant General's report on the 97th Regiment, and information from Frederick Dyer's, "A Compendium of the War of the Rebellion." From these sources, the following history of the 97th Regiment and specifically James Devine's service was compiled: Enlisted: Aug. 14, 1862. His enlisting officer was Captain Patrick Henry Peutzer. Mustered in: Sep. 16, 1862 at Camp Butler, IL age 24. Sep 16 to Oct 31, 1862 absent in hospital at Lexington, KY. After being mustered out, the 97th proceeded homeward by way of New Orleans and the Mississippi River to East St. Louis. They reached East St. Louis on August 19 and then by train to Springfield, IL.

The story goes that his parents died of an epidemic when he was quite young. He and his sister Mary were sent up river to relatives in St. Louis by the name of Smith. He and his first wife, Mary Warrick had one child, a son. He and his second, wife, Neoma Hardwick, took care of the child of his first marriage. The child did not survive many years. Looking at the dates, James enlisted in the army about a year after his marriage so the child was young. Apparently Mary was unable to provide for the child and it was cared for in the poor house. He took custody of the child after his discharge from the army. John Ree, Justice of the Peace, married James Devine and Neoma Hardwick in Calhoun County on September 16, 1866. It was witnessed by A. Yandle, Clerk of the County Court. Neoma Hardwick was born Apr 20, 1850 in Cloverland, Putnam Co., Indiana, and died June 11, 1941 in Calhoun Co., IL. (Note: John Alfred was a World War II Veteran of the Army Air Forces. He was a Staff Sergeant. His Service Start Date: 28 Oct 1941. Service End Date: 28 Aug 1945. ---- Here are memories of John Alfred Godar written by his son Mark Godar - Memories of my Dad, John A. Godar 11/5/1919 – 12/9/2009 - As Dad's Favorite, I thought it would be appropriate to share a few words about him. I know many of my brothers and sisters think Terry is Dad's favorite, and he was, at first...but after having Terry, and then having four girls in a row, Dad was so relieved to get another boy that I became his new favorite, and have been ever since....(of course, that may have more to do with the morel mushrooms I've brought him over the years...and I am really going to miss sharing mushrooms with my Dad.) Everyone who knew my Dad even a little knew what a great man he was. Long before we knew he was a war hero, he was a hero to his Baker's Dozen children. My Dad came from a time where it was not the custom to show affection or heap lots of praise on children. So we didn't grow up with lots of hugs and compliments, but there was no shortage of love. And he certainly was popular with his grandkids-or any kids for that matter! They all seemed to know that my Dad could make a quarter disappear and reappear out of their ears, and that was just part of the magic he had with children. Some of the most common photos of my Dad are with kids sitting on him, (or him sitting on them!) in 'Grandpa's chair'. My Dad wasn't a man of a lot of words, but we learned pretty early to pay attention to the words he did say! Like, 'The Lord Helps Them That Help Themselves', and 'He Who Hesitates is Last' (often used at a buffet line!). And his advice has stood the test of time as I have tried to pass that same advice and wisdom to my children, and I look forward to seeing them pass it on to my grandchildren. Not to get too 'Lion King' here, but that is truly what the circle of life is all about. The best way to remember and honor my Dad is to remember the lessons he taught us, like working hard, and doing the best we can, and never stop learning because, even if we may never need it, it will never hurt us to have learned something new.

Speaking of lessons, my Dad never talked much about his WWII service, so until my sister Jane got Dad to let her publish his Diary, we didn't know too much about his service. But he did share a few stories, and they always seemed to have a moral. Like the one about the buddy who pulled a clip out of a .45 and then swung it around his finger while playing cards, and even pointing it at people. Then he pointed it at the ground and pulled the trigger and it went off! This was our lesson in always making sure the chamber is clear, and never to point a gun at something we didn't intend to shoot! Another lesson was the day he wrote in his diary that he would never forget, the one where saboteurs booby-trapped a load of bombs which exploded killing most of his crew. All I ever heard Dad say about that day was that the 'boys' as he called them, wanted to go swimming so they got in a hurry to unload the bombs and, against normal procedure, parked two truck load of bombs next to each other. Fortunately, only one was booby-trapped, but my Dad didn't know that when he drove the second truck away from the flames to keep it from exploding also! But my biggest lesson from that day is what Dad wrote in his Diary. His entry starts by saying, 'This is a bad day I shall never forget'. Now, when I think I am having a bad day, I stop and think about what my Dad went through, and things never seem quite so bad! Another lesson I got from Dad's Diary was that during four years of being overseas away from home during the War, he never missed mass or at least communion. Again, knowing that makes it pretty hard for me to say that it is 'too much trouble' to get to church! For all of these and hundreds of other lesson's he taught me over the years, I say thank you Dad and I love you. May you rest in well deserved peace.) - Mark

Ruth Godar Schaberg's Eulogy, October 21, 2011 - Ruth's favorite things: Reading, above all else, she loved reading all of her life. We are going to have a reading day in Mom's honor each year around her birthday - Feb. 25th Dancing – she did love to dance, after Dad died, there wasn't much opportunity Playing the piano – she could play by ear. She took lessons for about 6 weeks, but didn't like them, so she didn't continue. We always enjoyed hearing her play. Sometimes at the end of our parties, she would sneak quietly into the living room and start playing the piano, once we realized that she was playing, we would quietly go into the room one by one, no talking to disturb her, and just enjoy the music she made. Her Catholic faith - she had a very strong faith and relied on God to see her thru the hard times. All she ever wanted to be when she grew up was a mother – be careful what you ask for. When Dennis and I were born, she had four kids and the oldest was only 3 ½ and Dad traveled during the week, so he was home mostly on weekends. Four years later, she had Tom and Anne – now she had six kids and the oldest was 7 ½. We kids always had someone to play with i.e. board games, card games, outside etc. We learned at a young age, that if we spilt our milk when eating, we should just run. Inevitably, it was the day that Mom had just mopped the floor. We prayed the family rosary almost daily, which included the Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It was sometimes hard to stop playing outside in the evening, to come inside to pray. Dad had his first heart attack when he was 44, it probably should have killed him. Mom didn't drive at that time, she would take the bus to Jerseyville every day to go visit Dad in the hospital. Mom did have to learn to drive the truck and get her license to continue selling feed and delivering it to the farmers. With the three older boy's help, she was able to do that.

Our grandkids and even our spouses never had an opportunity to meet Dad so they don't know much about him, or about Mom and Dad's relationship. Especially after Dad's first heart attack, he seemed to enjoy life more, and laugh more. We have a picture of Dad pushing Mom on a swing. Before he left for work every day, he gave her some really great good-bye kisses. They had only 21 years together, but they seemed deeply in love for those years. At 51, Dad had another heart attack and died. Mom lived 46 years longer than Dad, almost to the day. It was a very hard time for all of us. Mom and us kids helped and supported each other. Mom didn't have a Missouri driver's license, but four of us kids could drive, so we provided transportation to Mom wherever she needed to go. She even turned to us for advice, including us in her decisions. When Dad died, Tom and Anne were in grade school, Dennis and I were in high school, and Robert and John were in college. Mom was told that she couldn't afford to keep her kids in college. I used to think that she should have asked me to not to college, because I was a girl and probably not going to support a family. She never did, she was just quietly in the background supporting us and keeping us together. All six of us graduated from college, and three of the kids have graduate degrees. As you could see from the video, Mom's family continued to grow and grow. She sometimes would say to me, "Look what you started", referring to all of my children and grandchildren. I would just say, "Excuse me?". After we were all married, Mom and Robert helped and supported each other. They had many years together. Robert took on more and more home duties as Mom aged. Mom was always eager for funny stories about the grandchildren and then the great grandchildren. My kids tried to keep me in stories so I could pass them on to Mom. In that way, of course, I got to hear the stories also Mom might have been the most contented person you could meet. She had no interest in material things.

At 89, she broke her hip, and had surgery to replace it. Then she had surgery to install a pacemaker. Then she got pneumonia and then a severe C-diff infection. All of this occurred from March to late May – she was transferred back and forth from the hospital and the nursing home. She prayed to be allowed to come home again, and once again her prayers were answered. Anne and John were both off work for the summer, so they came separately to stay with her and nurse her back to health with Robert's help. Mom no longer went to Mass on Sunday, but she continued to pray from home. She often prayed for a resolution to the world's problems which included starvation and abortion. Robert would bring Holy Communion home to her. The parish priests came to visit her sometimes and anoint her. She lived 41/2 more years at home. I guess Mom decided that she had done the best she could for all of us and now hopefully, we can stand on our own feet. We need to continue in her tradition and make her proud of us. The story for today is that some of the young kids were jealous of Grandma Ruth because she had pink glasses. Listen, can you hear it? Can you hear the music playing softly? They say there is beautiful music in heaven. Now just imagine Mom and Dad finally together again, dancing in heaven. Thanks, Bonnie

Grandma Ruth petitions: *For all who are traveling, that they may have safe journeys, let us pray to the Lord. *For all those in danger, or whose work is dangerous, that they may be safe, let us pray to the Lord. *For all those affected by war, or terrorism, or disease, or disaster, that God may be with them to protect and heal them, let us pray to the Lord. *For all those who are hungry, or who do not have good shelter or clean water, let us pray to the Lord. *For all those who are looking for work, that the Holy Spirit will guide them in finding ways to use their talents and to provide for their families, let us pray to the Lord. *In thanksgiving for all the great gifts God has given us, and that we may use those gifts to help others, let us pray to the Lord. *For peace and cooperation and goodwill throughout the world, let us pray to the Lord. *For all who mourn, that they may be comforted, let us pray to the Lord. *For Ruth, and for all who have died, that they may rest in the blessed, holy, and happy peace of God, let us pray to the Lord.

Among those from afar attending the funeral, was ?? ------ ------ of Dow, who in spite of all warnings came per buggy, holding her 3 week old baby closely wrapped in warm clothing in her arms. 2 miles from Jerseyville the young mother took a look at the babe and found it safe; still, when the house of mourning was reached and the little one taken out of the wraps, the spark of life had escaped.
