Note: I received the following email and Hetzel family genealogy information from Eric Hartsfield, EricHartsfield@aol.com, great-grandson of John Edward & Sopha (Goshorn) Hetzel. Date: Mon, Jun 29, 2009.----------------- Mr. Westfall,
My name is Eric Hartsfield. I am looking for Hetzel leads. I just attended the Hetzel reunion in Lemmon, South Dakota where Joan (Hetzel) Thompson told me of your website. Your website is fantastic! I am still exploring it. I guess I better tell you how I fit into the family tree. My great-grandparents are John Edward & Sopha (Goshorn) Hetzel. My grandparents are John "Clarence" & Evelyn Grace (Wenner) Hetzel. My parents are James "Rex" & Mary Evelyn (Hetzel) Hartsfield. I am Eric James Hartsfield.

I am one of the genealogists in the family. It was great to compare old pictures and such at the reunion and meet others who may be interested in genealogy. My parents stopped in Jerseyville a few years ago. We took pictures of houses and gravestones and did research in the courthouse and the historical society. We found a couple of Hetzel relatives in a cafe in Jerseyville but did not get connected with anyone with family lore and old photographs. At the reunion Joan's sister, Laura (Hetzel) Hand, had a 1925 snapshot of the Hetzels and I have seen little pictures of Mary Hetzel and Nettie Hetzel from about 1900 and a couple of portraits of my great grandfather when he was in college in the 1890s. Do you have any leads on whom we should contact for earlier photographs? I saw that you went to school with Ed Hetzel. I am not sure if you would be interested in any of the following but thought I would send it your way.

My great-grandfather, John Edward Hetzel wrote:"...I was born in a three room log cabin in Washington School District, English Township, Jersey County, Illinois, 10 miles west of Jerseyville, Ill., on Feb. 6th 1873. Figure it out for yourself. I guess I was present at this wonderful occasion and probably the main attraction but I know little about it except what Mother and Dad tole me. It was snowing hard and about 2 foot of snow on the ground. My nurse was a neighbor about one half mile away - a very devout Catholic lady weighing around 240 lbs. by the name of Bunse. So you see I arrived in a very clean world outside and inside the house - fresh snow all around and over the house and a good Catholic lady inside. Well there has been a lot of water went under and over the bridge since that event and I am still very much in evidence and expect to be for some time to come..." (letter from John E. Hetzel, Keldron, SD to his granddaughter, Viola (Dorsett) Miller, Beulah, WY, 14 February 1948).

My great-grandmother, Sopha (Goshorn) Hetzel wrote: "Husband:  John E. Hetzel was born at the home of his parents 3 mi. N.E. of Fieldon, Jersey Co., Ill. on the 6th day of February 1873. He was reared and educated in Washington district in English Twp., Jersey Co., Ill. until 20 yrs. old.      "The winter of 1893 and 1894 he took a commercial course in the Northwestern Normal school at Stanberry, Mo.      "The winter of 1894 & 1895 he attended the Normal College at Bushnell, Ill.      "He was married at the home of her parents home 4 mi. N.W. of Fieldon, Ill., Jersey Co., Ill. on the 29th day of July 1896.      "He started farming in 1896 on his place 1/2 Mi. N. and 2 Mi. W. of Dow Station, Ill.      "He moved with his family to Eldred, Green Co., Ill. in the Spring of 1904 and started in the General Merchandise business.      "In 1910 he, with his family, moved to his homestead S. of Keldron.      "He resided their until Sept. 10, 1951 when he went to Lemmon, S. Dak.      "He died at his home in Lemmon, S. Dak., Dec. 2, 1953.      "Wife:  Sopha Hetzel (Nee Goshorn) born at the home of her parents in Fieldon, Jersey Co., Ill. on the 29th day of Dec. 1873.      "She attended school until she was ten yrs. of age.      "Then, with her parents, she moved to their home in Richwood Township, Jersey Co., Ill.  Here she attended Gunterman school.      "Then she attended Jerseyville high school at Jerseyville, Ill.  The winter of 1893 and 1895 she taught at the Washington school.  In the spring of 1895 she attended Greer College at Hooperton.  The Winter of 1895 and 1896 she taught Washington school.      "She was married to John E. Hetzel at the home of her parents 4 mi. N.W. of Fieldon on the 29th day of July 1896 by Rev. J. D. Crawford"  (Sopha Goshorn, probably 1954 during visit to Anacortes, Washington). She also wrote names and dates for their children and the Goshorn and Hetzel siblings. I can write these in a future e-mail if you like.

Joan (Hetzel) Thompson had some family lore that jived with the family lore that I had heard.  She stated that the first John Hetzel (Sopha's father-in-law) left Germany because of a tradition that the oldest son got the estate and the second son was expected to become a priest. He was the second son and did not want to become a priest! I am not sure that the tradition I had heard stated that it was the "second" son but whatever son was to become priest, John was it!

My grandfather, Clarence Hetzel, married my grandmother, Evelyn Grace Wenner, on 12 September 1932 in Thunder Hawk, Corson County, South Dakota.  They made their home at "the Feddler place" which was just a little south and east of the John and Sopha (Goshorn) Hetzel and Ed Wheaton (son of Anton Wheaton of Fieldon) homesteads in Corson County.  In search of work they left South Dakota in 1938 and joined her brother, Dean Wenner, in Mount Vernon, Washington. Early in 1939 they moved east across the mountains to Okanogan, Washington where the extended Wenner relations had moved in 1908. ----- Both daughters were born at Elsie MacDonald's Nursing Home in Okanogan: Mary Evelyn on 21 April 1939 and Margaret Ellen on 23 July 1940. Late in 1940 the family moved back west across the mountains to Anacortes, Washington where Clarence and his brother-in-law, Dean Wenner, joined the Anacortes Veneer cooperative (from which they both retired). Clarence purchased a small old house on four 30' x 100' lots in Anacortes in October 1941 (for $1500 and $100 down) at 1015 "E" Avenue (now 2020 11th Street) and built a new house (2016 11th) in 1964 on the east two lots, paneled throughout with fine paneling from the Veneer. Here he died of prostate cancer on 22 March 1989. He and Evelyn are buried at Fernhill Cemetery near Anacortes. ----- Mary and Margaret both graduated from Anacortes High School, Mary in 1956 (salutatorian) and Margaret in 1958. They both graduated from Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon, Mary in 1960 and Margaret in 1962. They both became elementary school music teachers: Mary at Sandy, Oregon from 1960 to 1964 and Margaret at Estacada, Oregon from 1962 to 1969. Mary received her master's degree at Lewis and Clark in 1962. In 1964 she found a better paying position in the Anacortes schools and worked from 1964 to 1967 when she retired to raise a family. ----- Margaret married Art Kennedy April 27, 1963. She had three step-children: Joe, Duane, and Laura Kennedy. They had Edward James Kennedy on 2 January 1965. They moved to Poulsbo in 1969 where Margaret briefly continued teaching elementary music until a school levy failed. She then taught sixth grade until she retired in 1995. She got her masters from Western Washington University in Summer 1992. ------ Mary married Rex Hartsfield on 24 June 1966 at the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Anacortes. My brother and I were born at Oak Harbor, Washington at NAS Whidbey at the old base hospital on the seaplane base, I, Eric James Hartsfield, on 1 December 1967, and he, Carl Rex Hartsfield, on 9 August 1969. The family home was in Anacortes at 3322 W 3rd Street from 1966 to the summer of 1970 when my parents purchased the home at 2020 11th Street that my grandparents had sold in 1964. From 1970 through January 1979, we lived next door to my grandparents. My father retired from the Navy and we moved to Pinellas County, Florida where I graduated high school in 1986 and my brother in 1987. I started college at the University of Tennessee in the Fall of 1986 and my brother started at Georgia Tech in the Fall of 1987. In November of 1987 my parents moved to Fayetteville, Tennessee. My father worked for four different defense companies in nearby Huntsville, Alabama between 1987 and 1990 (a bad time to be in the defense industry), and then returned to Anacortes, Washington in the Fall of 1990. ------ My brother graduated from Georgia Tech in August 1991 and I graduated from the University of Tennessee in December 1991. Carl was Air Force ROTC at Georgia Tech and was called to active duty in the Summer of 1992 and is just now moving (with a wife and two daughters, 18 and 12, to Dayton, Ohio where he will be teaching at the Air Force Institute. I was hired by the State of Washington, Department of Transportation in the Seattle area in March 1993 and currently help put together highway contract plans. Our father retired the last time in the late 1990s. In 2001 my parents, Grandma Hetzel, and Aunt Margaret moved to my dad's hometown of Columbia, Tennessee. My grandmother died there in 2004. My parents and my aunt put their homes on the market in June 2008. My aunt's sold in two days. My parents' is still on the market. Well, I have spent way to much time writing this (as usual). I am hungry!
Thank you, Eric Hartsfield, Edmonds, Washington
