Cornelius Westfall

Cornelius Westfall was the founder of Thorntown in Boone County, Indiana in 1830, and built the first house in Thorntown. Cornelius Westfall and the house he built in Thorntown, Indiana are pictured in a book "The Thorntown Centurial", published in 1930.  The book is about Thorntown, Indiana, which was founded in 1830 by Cornelius Westfall.

Cornelius Westfall was born 7 Mar. 1778 in Beverly, Randolph County, Virginia, and died 5 Sept. 1856 in Wolf Grove, McDonough County, Illinois. He married 1st Elizabeth Bryan, married 2nd Rachel Dye, and married 3rd Sarah Mary Davis 10 Oct. 1823. She was born in 1802 in New Jersey, and died in 1874 in Wolfgrove, Illinois. Cornelius was the son of Jacob Westfall born 1755 and Mary (King) Westfall. His grandparents were Jacob and Judith (Hornbeck) Westfall. His great grandparents were Jurian and Styntje (Kuykendall) Westfall. His great great grandparents were Johannes and Marritje (Kool) Westfall, and Cornelius's great great great grandfather was the original Westfall immigrant to America who came to America in 1642 from Holland, Jurian Westfall who married Maritje Hansen. *******Cornelius was the first child born to Jacob Westfall and Mary King. Cornelius was age sixteen when he moved with his parents to Elizabethtown, Kentucky in 1794. Cornelius moved to Ohio before 1803 and helped establish the town of Dayton and taught in the first Dayton school. Later, Cornelius moved to Miami County, Ohio and surveyed and platted the town of Troy. He became Clerk of Common Pleas for Miami County and served in that position for twenty-four years. Cornelius wed Rachel Dye (1784 - 1823) in Miami County, Ohio on April 25, 1809, and they had two daughters, whose names are unknown. Rachel died in about 1822 and Cornelius wed Sarah Mary Davis (1802 - 1874) in Miami County on October 28, 1823. Sarah was born in Trenton, New Jersey on September 6, 1802. They lived in present Troy, Ohio and there had thyese children: (1) Beverly Randolph Westfall born 13 Aug 1824, died 1882; (2) Mary Elizabeth Westfall Armstrong born 14 Dec 1825, died 1905; and (3) Sarah Ann Westfall born in 1828. On November 10, 1829, Cornelius bought 160 acres in Indiana for $4 per acre. In April of 1830, Cornelius platted his land into ninety-four lots to create the town of Thorntown. It was named after the Miamis Indian village that had been there and named ka-wi-a-ki-un-gi (place of thorns). There they had these children: (4) Josephine (Malissa) Westfall Otterman born 1 May 1830, died 1923; (5) Louisa Maria Westfall Harris born 4 Dec 1832, died 1907; (6) Elnathan Kemper Westfall born 8 Jan 1839, died 1912; (7) Harriet Steele Westfall Cogswell born on 30 Aug 1841, died 1924; and (8) Clara Amelia Westfall born in 1845. In 1854, Cornelius moved to a farm in Macomb Township in McDonough County, Illinois and died there two years later.

THE MAN WHO FOUNDED THORNTOWN - There is some evidence that there had been a trading post on the site of where Thorntown now is as early as 1827. Prior to this time the area was occupied by the Pottawatomie Indians under a grant from the Government. In 1826 their tribe ceded the land back to the government and in 1828 their title to the land became extinct by reason of the treaty and the land was disposed of through a government land office in Crawfordsville, Indiana. Several men came to the area but it was Cornelius Westfall who entered the land from the government where Thorntown now stands, which he did on the tenth day of November 1829. On the tenth day of April, 1830 he laid out and platted the original Plat of Thorntown, which Plat comprises the greater part of the best part of Thorntown. Cornelius also built the first house in Thorntown. The history that we have at our command tells us that a post office was established in 1829. About this time it seems that a demand for social and business organization began to exist. (Excerpt from an article written by George Lyster for the 1930 Thorntown Centennial.)

--------------------

Cornelius Westfall's gr. gr. gr. grandfather Juriaen Westfall (Westvael) was born in 1629 in Holland. Jurian Westfall was the first recorded Westfall ancestor in America. He came to America in 1642. On August 4, 1642 Jurian Westfall (Juriaen Van Westphalen) arrived in New Amsterdam, New York aboard a ship called "The Houttuyn" from Luyderdorp, Holland. He was only 13 at the time. His family had migrated to Holland from Westphalia in Germany in the 1600's. It is not known whether his parents died in Holland or enroute, or he came with other relatives. He then went up the Hudson River 135 miles arriving at Fort Orange (later Albany) New York on August 11, 1642. He arrived as an indentured servant to killiaen Van Reassalaer. He was placed in the home of Michael Jansen ... Jurian moved south of Albany to Esopus (later Kingston) New York with his friend and fellow indentured servant Evert Pels in about 1653. He was granted 32 morgan (70 acres) of land Sept. of 1654. He married Marretge Jansen that same year. On Aug. 17, 1659 Jurian and 12 others petitioned Peter Stuyvesant to establish a chuch at Wiltwyck (Esopus was briefly named Wiltwyck and later after British rule called Kingston}. Jurian signed with a three pronged fork of trident mark. The church was established. Numerous records regarding Jurian and his descendants are available in records of the then Dutch Reformed Church of New York.

-------------------

The following information is from a book "American Nomads" written by Emily Stowell whose ancestor Jacob Kuykendall married Sara Westfall daughter of Johannes.... The Esopus Indians lived near Wiltwyck and for a number of years they were peaceful, but in 1663 they burned and looted the town. There were 12 men, 2 children, and 4 women killed, and 6 women and 7 children taken prisoner. Jurian and his family escaped harm at the time, but later in 1667 or 1668 Jurian was killed by Indians who were at war with the Esopus Indians while he was guiding a troop of British soldiers. Jurian married Marretje Hansen about 1654. Marretje was born in about 1636 in Holland. Her father was Hans Hansen or Jansen (Hans Jansen Van Noordstrandt). Hans was born about 1610 on Norstrand Island, Netherlands, and migrated to New Amsterdam in 1638. He worked as an interpreter and often traveled between Holland and the new settlement. He married Rymerig Volkert, and they had 4 children-Marretje, Hans, Simon, and Elsa. His wife died in 1645, and Hans placed Marritje who was just 9 and her sister Elsa in the home of a farmer Phillip Garretsen where they learned the art of homemaking. Hans died in 1690 in Flatlands, Brooklyn. After Jurian's death Marritje remarried to Jacob Jansen. Marritje died after 1670 in Ulster, Kingston County, New York.

----------------

In 1696 Jurian's son Johannes Westfall and 18 others including his brothers Symen, Nicholas, and his widowed sister Rymerick Quick bought land from the Minsi Indians along the Delaware River near the New York/New Jersey line. The land lies principally in Deerpark Township, Orange County, New York. The peaceful Minsi Indians were one of the three tribes of the Lenni Lenape people. About 1699 Johannes and his family moved to what was called the Minisink settlement. They were among the first white people to live in the area. Johannes oldest son Jurian and his friend Jacob Kuykendall hunted and trapped with the Minsi Indians as youths, and later traded with them. Jurian married Jacob's sister Styntje Kuykendall and Jacob married Jurian's sister Sara westfall. They raised their families and farmed there in the Minisink Valley along the Delaware River at peace with the Indians for many years. Jurian had the first apple orchard in the area, and Jacob established the first trading post.

---------------------

Jurian and Marretje (Hansen) Westfall had 6 children-Rymerick Westfall, Nicholas Claes Westfall, Johannes Juriaen Westfall, Abel Westfall, Symen Westfall, and Elsjen Westfall.

Cornelius Westfall gr. gr. gr. grandson of Jurian Westfall was born 7 Mar. 1778 in Beverly, Randolph County, Virginia, and died 5 Sept. 1856 in Wolf Grove, Illinois. Cornelius Westfall married 1st Elizabeth Bryan, October 13, 1795 in Nelson County, Kentucky. (Note: I don't know if Cornelius Westfall and his 1st wife Elizabeth Bryan had any children. I have been unable to find any information about any children they may have had together.)

Cornelius Westfall married 2nd Rachel Dye, April 25, 1809 in Miami County, Ohio, and she died in 1823. Rachel Dye was born about 1784 and died in 1823 in Miami County, Ohio. It is probable that Cornelius Westfall and Rachel Dye had no children together since her estate was divided among her relatives. Rachel Dye was a daughter of Andrew Dye and Sarah Miner. Andrew Dye was a son of James and Sarah (Leach) Dye. He was born in 1744 near Cranberry, Middlesex County, New Jersey and he died on July 5, 1831 in Miami County, Ohio. He married 1st Sarah Miner in 1768, and she died in 1810. She was a first cousin of Martha (Curtis) Washington wife of President George Washington. Andrew Dye moved to Maryland and from there to Whiteley Creek in what is now Greene County, Pennsylvania, where in 1785, he had warranted to him a tract of land under the title "Sparrows Nest." He had met and married Sarah Minor, sister of Colonel John Minor, one of the first settlers on Whiteley Creek, a daughter of Stephen and Athaliah (Updyke) Minor. During the Revolutionary War he was a soldier in the Pennsylvania Line for which service he received a pension. Sometime after 1790, he removed to Kentucky and then in 1803, to Ohio, where he died at Stillwater, Newton Township, Miami County, on July 5, 1835. His second wife was Mrs. Ann (Lamb) Evans, who was born April 11, 1767, and died January 7, 1843. Andrew Dye and his second wife are buried in Pleasant Hill, Miami County, Ohio.

Cornelius Westfall married 3rd Sarah Mary Davis 10 Oct. 1823 in Miami County, Ohio. Sarah Mary Davis Westfall was born Sep. 6, 1802 in Trenton, Mercer County, New Jersey, and died Mar. 2, 1874 in Wolfgrove, McDonough County, Illinois. Sarah was born to Joseph Davis and Sarah Phillips. She wed Cornelius Westfall in Miami County, Ohio on October 10, 1823. They lived in present Troy, Ohio and there had these children: (1) Beverly Randolph Westfall born on 13 Aug 1824, died 1889; (2) Mary Elizabeth Westfall born on 14 Dec 1825, died 1905; and (3) Sarah Ann Westfall born in 1828. In 1829, the family moved to present Thornton, Indiana and there had these children: (4) Josephine (Malissa) Westfall born on 1 May 1830, died 1923; (5) Louisa Maria Westfall born on 4 Dec 1832, died 1907; (6) Elnathan Kemper Westfall born on 8 Jan 1839, died 1912; (7) Harriet Steele Westfall born on 30 Aug 1841, died 1924; and (8) Clara Amelia Westfall born in 1845.

------------------

(1a) Columbus L. Westfall's daughter Josie Westfall was born Oct. 16, 1873 in Macomb, McDonough County, Illinois, and died Jun. 3, 1941 in Macomb, McDonough County, Illinois. Burial: Oakwood Cemetery, Macomb, McDonough County, Illinois. -------- "Aunt Josie" Westfall was born in 1873 in Macomb, Illinois. She did not marry and worked as a dressmaker. Josie began her career as "mother" by taking just 2 children into her home in 1911. Before a single year had passed, she was providing a home for 19 children. The county board of supervisors agreed to supply $25 per month to assist Josie in the children's care. In 1913, an Orphanage Board was appointed. The County purchased a 12-room house at 415 N. Madison Street in Macomb. An addition was soon added to the home, as the number of children grew to 67. Although the funding was increased, money was always in short supply. In 1914, Josie ran for the position of Macomb City Judge and planned to donate her salary to the orphanage. She was elected by a large margin. Josie received a total of 839 votes to defeat her closest opponent's total of 577. Her opponent contested the race in McDonough County court on the grounds that the election was not legal. Although the Illinois Women's Suffrage Act was passed in 1913, the suit claimed the Act did not authorize ladies to vote in that judicial election. Josie's opponent had received 430 votes from men to Josie's 409 votes. The County court found in favor of Josie and women's right to vote, but the Illinois Supreme Court reversed the decision. It would be 1920 before the 19th Amendment was passed. An interesting side note is that one of the lawyers representing Josie's opponent was a woman. Josie's goal of serving the area children continued without the funds from a judicial position. She enlisted the assistance of area organizations. The community responded with clothing, food, medical services, and Christmas presents. During her career of thirty years as an orphanage matron, Josie provided guidance, food, shelter and care for over 500 children. She was not paid for her services, although she was provided with a place to live. In 1940, an illness forced Josie to retire from her work. She died in June 1941 at the age of sixty-seven.

Jacob Stalnaker Sr.

Jacob Stalnaker Sr. was born abt. 1710 in South Carolina. He died in 1792 in Beverly, Randolph Co., Virginia. He was buried in Scotts Lake, Beverly, Randolph Co., Virginia, Stalnaker Cemetery. He married Marie Elizabeth Truby. He was a son of Captain Samuel Stalnaker born in Westphalia, Germany, died in 1769/1777, and Sarah (Susannah) Williams died on 18 Jun 1755 in Augusta Co, Virginia (killed by indians). Captain Samuel Stalnaker and Sarah (Susannah) Williams had the following children-Jacob Stalnaker Sr born abt. 1710, married Marie Elizabeth Truby born abt. 1720; Adam Stalnaker born in Virginia, died 18 Jun 1755 in Virginia (killed by indians); Nancy Stalnaker born abt. 1717, married James Booth born 1705 in Wales; and George Stalnaker. Captain Samuel Stalnaker was an explorer, trapper, and guide, and the first white man to discover Cumberland Gap. He was a Captain in the French and Indian Wars, and was a mediator between the Indians and the early Virginia government. He commanded a stockade fort at Draper's Meadows. The name Stalnaker is derived from the German word "Stahal" and "Stald" for steel, and "Negel" meaning sharp point or spear. The origin was "Stahlnegel" meaning sharp pointed steel spear. So the word was first applied to a warrior who was armed with such a weapon.

(Note: That Samuel Stalnaker was in Augusta County, Virginia before 1748 is proven by the Journal of Dr. Walker, who states that in April, 1748, he met Samuel Stalnaker on his way to the Cherokees. (Filson Club Papers, No. 13, Page 42). On March 23, 1750, Dr. Walker again met Stalnaker, who had just come to the place to settle on Middle Fork of Holston River, the last western settlement in Virginia. Here his house was built and here, no doubt, the Cherokees wished to meet the Commissioners of Virginia. On the map of 1751, this settlement is located on the Middlefork of Holston River, a few miles above its junction with the south fork, which is now Washington County, formerly a part of Fincastle, and the first county in Virginia named for George Washington. When Samuel Stalnaker was born; where he was born; when and where he was married, is unknown. The next record we have is in Summers History of southern West Virginia, Page 58, in which is given a register of persons killed or taken prisoners by the Indians in 1754, 1755, and 1756, on the New and Holston Rivers and Reedy Creek. This register states that Samuel Stalnaker on Holston River was taken prisoner, and escaped, but that his wife, Mrs. Stalnaker and his son, Adam, were killed. The official report of this is found in Dinwiddie Papers, Vol. 2, Page 447, in a letter written to Governor Sharpe of Maryland by Governor Dinwiddie dated April 1, 1756, regarding Indian troubles saying "One Stalnaker who was taken prisoner by Shawnees escaped and says he saw six French officers and one thousand from Outboten? Bound to Fort Duquense and the frontier. Samuel Stalnaker was an explorer, trapper, and guide, the first white man to discover Cumberland Gap, and who hunted and explored in Kentucky many years before Daniel Boone ever entered it.)

(Note: From - First explorations of Kentucky: Doctor Thomas Walker's journal of an ... By Josiah Stoddard Johnston ------ 23rd. We kept down Holston River about four miles and Camped; and then Mr. Powel and I went to look for Samuel Stalnaker, * who I had been inform'd was just moved out to settle. We found his Camp, and returned to our own in the Evening.
24th. We went to Stalnaker's, helped him to raise his house and Camped about a quarter of a mile below him. In April, 1748, I met the above mentioned Stalnaker between the Reedy Creek Settlement and Holstons River, on his way to the Cherokee Indians,* and expected him to pilate me as far as he knew but his affairs would not permit him to go with me.
This was the Middle Fork of the Holston, which joins the French Broad near Knoxville and forms the Tennessee. The Holston was called by the Indians first the Cat-Cloo, afterward the Watauga. It took its present name from an early hunter and explorer named Holston. Haywood's Tennessee. Samuel Stalnaker was probably, as his name indicates, one of the early pioneers from the Lower Shenandoah Valley or from Pennsylvania, of German descent, the family having numerous representatives in the valley. He was doubtless a hunter and Indian trader who had visited the Cherokees and was acquainted with the route to Cumberland Gap, upon which Doctor Walker had never been, or he would not have needed a guide. It was from him evidently that Doctor Walker received information as to certain localities he was about to visit, as Clinch River, Cave Gap, and other points of which, as he advanced into Kentucky, he gave evidence of previous information. It is not improbable that the route from the Ohio River to Cumberland Gap and the Cherokee country, which at that time was defined and known as "the Warriors' Path," was traveled by hunters and traders, and that Stalnaker was acquainted with it personally or from others. On Fry and Jefferson's Map, 1751, Stalnaker's settlement is put down as the extreme western habitation)

Jacob Stalnaker Sr.'s brother, and his father Captain Samuel Stalnaker's son Adam Stalnaker was born in Virginia, and died 18 Jun 1755 in Virginia (killed by indians)

(Note: Adam Stalnaker was killed by Indians in 1755 near Jacob Westfall's fort. Here is information about his death. - FORT WESTFALL, WV Indian attack's, By Tami Richmond September 29, 1999 - Here is a story passed down from events that took place at Fort Westfall, WV run by Jacob Westfall. Here is the connection between the Westfall & Stalnaker families. ____________________________________________ Old Jacob Stallnicker and Adam his son lived in Jacob Westfall's fort. Adam had been to Col. Ben Wilson's mill and was returning, he and his father. They had gotten their flour and were returning home. The Indians fired and killed Adam. His father escaped on his horse. Old man, I think, said he saw but two Indians. I saw the tree that Adam fell against, the blood was there a long time. And I saw him after he was scalped and nobody ever would have known him. He had been as pretty a man as you would see in a month. But his face was now all sunk away to be not wider than your hand. Capt. John White lived at Jacob Westfall's fort. Killed by the Indians in the neighborhood of JACOB WESTFALL's fort. Had married Adam Stallnicker's sister Katherine (Katy). Adam helped to dig the grave. Capt. John White had gone up to the upper part of the valley on business. Adam Stallnicker helped make a coffin, which they sent up to bring Capt. White down in, when he was killed and while it was gone, he helped dig the grave in which White was to be buried. It was in the middle of summer. They found him so black and mortified they couldn't bring him and so brought back the coffin. Not long after, Adam Stallnicker was put in the same coffin and interred in the same grave which himself had prepared. From an interview of David Crouch 1843 ca.
