Mary was the daughter of Peter King. ------------ (Note: Jacob (son of Jacob and Judith Hornbeck Westfall) is credited with building a fort (along with his father), a quarter mile south of Beverly in Randolph County. Into the twentieth century It was still known as Westfall's fort and consisted of a large two-story house enclosed in a stockade. The house stood for more than a century. Jacob built the fort in 1774 at the start of Lord Dunmore's War. During that time most settlers lived separate from a stockade located near their community. At the first sign of a threat from the Indians a rider would alert all the families in the area. The family would gather what provisions and clothing they could and go to the fort. The next day a party of armed men would gather the furniture and bring it to the fort. The Indians often burned the homes of the settlers and they could lose everything they owned. These events occurred many times; during actual or imagined Indian attacks until several years after the Revolution. It must have been an experience that the Westfalls were very familiar with. Westfall's Fort was in Tygarts Valley, Beverly, W. Va., built 1774. The windows were cut into the building after the Indian wars. In 1774, Jacob Westfall helped his father, Jacobus James Kuykendall Westfall, build the Westfall Fort and he became active in the Virginia militia. He was wedded to Mary King in March of 1777 by Baptist minister Redding. They had: (1) Cornelius on Mar 7, 1778; (2) Reuben in 1779. On Jun 20, 1781, Jacob left for Morgantown and enlisted on the 29th as a Lt. for six months in Col. Zachariah Morgan's regiment under General George Rodgers Clark. He went to Fort Pitt and continued on with the objective to take Fort Detroit from the British. This objective was eventually abandoned and they went down the Ohio River to the Falls at Louisville, Kentucky. No battles were fought but several soldiers were killed by Indians. He then had: (3) Levi on Jan 4, 1782; (4) Elizabeth on Jan 23, 1784. Jacob helped establish Randolph County and the county seat of Edmonton in 1787. There he had: (5) John in 1788; (6) Annie in 1790. On Dec 16, 1790, Edmonton was renamed Beverly. Jacob became a justice of the Peace and the first Randolph County sheriff. In 1794, he moved to Elizabethtown, Kentucky and there had: (7) Mary in 1795; (8) Jane on Aug 13, 1799. In 1808, Jacob moved to Miami County, Ohio, and in 1827, he moved to Clinton Township in Putnam County, Indiana; where he died in 1835.) Jacob was born to Jacob Westfall and Judith Hornbeck on their 400 acre farm along the South Fork of the South Branch of the Potomac River. He moved to present Beverly, Randolph County, West Virginia in 1772. In 1774, he helped his father build the Westfall Fort and became active in the Virginia militia. A large monument was placed in that cities Oak Hill cemetery and a new grave marker placed on Jacob's grave in Skillman Cemetery, along the bank of the Raccoon River. Crawfordsville was the county seat of Montgomery County and was Frank's home from 1835 to 1852, when it was a village of 1,000 people. ------------------- Reuben Westfall had 7 brothers and sisters-Levi Westfall (1782-1848) married 1st Temperance King, and married 2nd Margaret Pettit; Elizabeth Westfall (1784-1851) married David Swank; John Westfall born 1788 married Rachel; Anna Westfall born 1790 married John Anderson; Mary Westfall born 1796 married 1st Jeremiah King, and married 2nd Zacheus Tiberghein; Janet Westfall (1799-1863) married Daniel Mills; and Cornelius Westfall who founded Thorntown, Indiana in 1830. Burlington was then but a village and Iowa Territory still the home of many Indians. In the 1850s he and his family moved to a farm near Eddyville, Iowa where his 1st wife died. In 1862 he married 2nd to Miranda Brown (1823 - 1899). Lorenzo Dow Westfall and his 1st wife Eleanor (Crawford) Westfall had 12 children. Lorenzo Dow Westfall's obituary - THE CHARITON HERALD-PATRIOT - Chariton, Iowa, Thursday, January 12, 1911 - L. D. WESTFALL - Mr. Lorenzo Dow Westfall, Derby's oldest citizen, died at his home on Wednesday evening, Jan. 5th, 1911, at 8 o'clock. Mr. Westfall was born near Middletown, Ohio, on Dec. 23rd, 1818, and was married to Miss Eleanor Crawford of that place in 1836. Shortly after their marriage they moved to Wisconsin, where they remained but a short time when they came to Iowa, then a territory, and settled near Burlington. Burlington was then but a village and Iowa Territory still the home of many Indians. Mr. Westfall could relate from his own experiences many interesting stories of the pleasures and hardships of the early days in Iowa. In the fifties Mr. Westfall and family moved to a farm near Eddyville, where Mrs. Westfall died. In 1862 he was again married to Miss Miranda Brown, who died in Derby about twelve years ago. In 1877, Mr. Westfall came to Derby, which place has since been his home with the exception of a few years spent at Russell. Mr. Westfall has seven children living. They are Mrs. Frank Penick, of Derby, Mrs. John Tedrick, of Artesia, California, Julian Westfall, of Ankeny, Iowa, Mrs. Margaret Stodgehill, of Portland, Oregon, Allison Westfall, of Redlands, California, Wesley A. Westfall, of Albany, Oregon and Francis Westfall, of Chanute, Kansas. The deceased had been a member of the M. E. church for 72 years, having united with that church when he was twenty years of age. Mr. Westfall was blessed with a disposition that was remarkable for its cheeriness. Whatever were his burdens he endeavored at all times to look upon the bright side of life. "If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men," was a favorite passage of scripture of the deceased and one which those who knew him best know that he faithfully followed. Funeral services were held at the M. E. church Friday afternoon conducted by Rev. M. H. Keash. Interment was made at the Murray cemetery. ----------- (1a) Lorenzo Dow Westfall and his 1st wife Eleanor (Crawford) Westfall's daughter Diana Westfall Penick was born Feb. 10, 1843 in Des Moines County, Iowa, and died Jan. 24, 1931 in Lucas County, Iowa. Burial: Derby Cemetery, Derby, Lucas County, Iowa. Wife of John Franklin Penick (1839 - 1921), and daughter of Lorenzo Dow Westfall and Eleanor Crawford. She and her husband John Franklin Penick had these children: Ulysses Grant Penick (1863 - 1953); William Henry Penick (1865 - 1949); and Haller Penick (1879 - 1879). Diana (Westfall) Penick's obituary - THE CHARITON HERALD-PATRIOT - Chariton, Iowa, Thursday, January 29, 1931 - MRS. J. F. PENICK - Diana, daughter of Lorenzo Dow and Eleanor Westfall, was born near Burlington, Iowa, on February 10, 1843, and died at the home of her son, U. G. Penick, near Derby, Iowa, on January 24, 1931, at the advanced age of 87 years, 11 months and 10 days. When but a child she moved with her parents to Eddyville, Iowa, where she grew to womanhood and on January 22, 1863, she was united in marriage to John Franklin Penick, and for nearly three score years they traveled life's journey together. Mr. Penick passed to the great beyond August 25, 1921. To them were born three children, Haller, who died in infancy, U. G. Penick, of Derby, Iowa, and W. H. Penick, of Vineland, New Jersey, who survive to mourn the loss of their precious mother. Mrs. Penick was one of a family of twelve children. Five are living: Allison D. Westfall and Mrs. Margaret Armilda Stodghill, of Portland, Oregon; Julian C. Westfall, of Avery, Iowa; Francis A. Westfall, of Kansas City, Missouri; Mrs. Emma Tedrick, of Los Angeles, California. Besides the immediate family there are three grandchildren and four great grandchildren. In 1875, she and her husband came to Lucas county and purchased a farm about three miles from Derby, where they resided the greater part of the active period of their lives, and by industry and frugality, secured the competency and comforts that are the rewards of honest labor. In later years they retired from the farm and moved to Derby, where Grandma Penick maintained her home after her companion's death, for nearly ten years, until a short time before her decease, she made her home with her son, Grant. In the winter of 1877, a revival meeting was conducted in Derby by Rev. Daily, a Methodist circuit rider, as they were then designated, and at that time she made a confession of faith in Christ as her personal Savior. She joined the Methodist church at that time and remained in that communion until translated to the Church Triumphant. Mrs. Penick lived the major part of her life in this community and her life was an open book in her relationship to those with whom she associated. She was known and highly esteemed by a large concourse of neighbors, friends and acquaintances. She had strong convictions of what she conceived to be right and exemplified them in precept and practice. She was a loyal citizen, a good neighbor, a loving companion and a devoted mother. Although she lived years beyond the allotted time and came to the grave as a shock of corn, ripe in its season, her passing brings a cloud of sorrow to those who are dearest to her, but the blessings she bestowed along life's pathway will be a precious memory. Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock in the Methodist church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Miss Ida Roberts, assisted by Rev. W. H. Larrick, and interment was made in the Derby cemetery. Burial: Emery Chapel Cemetery, Bucyrus, Texas County, Missouri. She married Alfred Clayton Walker (1897 - 1982), and they had these children-Robert L. (Bobby) Walker (1922 - 1934); Alfred C. Walker (1928 - 1928); and Jackie Dale Walker; grandparents of Ricky Dale and Terry Anne; great grandparents of Chris, Brian, Laurie, Chad, Jeffery, and Jennie. Leste attended Coffee School in Plum Valley near Dykes, Missouri finishing the eighth grade. Not long after, she again attended the eighth grade to prepare to teach for a short time at the very same school. In childhood she accepted Jesus as her savior and was baptised in the Roubidoux Creek. Sometime in her teens she saw Alfred Clayton and decided that he would be the man she would marry. They were married in 1921. To this union their first child Robert was born in Bucyrus. Only a year or two after this event, they moved to the Kansas City area to seek gainful employment. Celeste learned to sew and became a seamstress sewing various parts of mens suit coats for Lee Walds in KCMo. She loved making clothes for her two young grandchildren. They wore these clothes mainly on Sundays because she took my sister Terry and I to Sunday School and Church service every week. Living and working most of her life in KC, she retired in 1964 and with her husband came back home to live in Bucyrus just across the gravel road from the post office. In her later years, she loved to sew, crochet, work in the vegetable garden, and fish. She never drove an automobile and always acted about half frightened to ride in one. She would frequently put on the brakes with her feet to the floorboard of the passenger side. But her most cherished things to do in life were reading her Bible and attending church services in KC and at Bucyrus Baptist Church. She was a wonderful and loving woman who will always be remembered and loved by those who knew her. If she isn't in heaven with the Lord, then most of us don't have much of a chance being there either. It's rather easy to see, I was very fond of my grandma. Westfall was born in Iowa City, Iowa, on the 16th of December, 1846. He was a county commissioner of Codington county, South Dakota. He also had a a homestead, which he located on section 24, Oxford Township, Hamlin County, South Dakota. He married Adele Clough, a daughter of Charles and Adaline Clough. They had no children of their own, but adopted a boy, Claude C. Westfall. Here is biography information about Murray W. Westfall from "The History of the Dakota Territories" - MURRAY W. WESTFALL - For sixteen consecutive years Murray W. Westfall of Watertown has been one of the county commissioners of Codington county and is the only man who has been thus honored, for no other commissioner has been continued for so long a period in the office. In former years he was actively engaged in farming in this part of the state but is now largely living retired from business cares. He was born in Iowa City, Iowa, on the 16th of December, 1846, a son of the Rev. I. M. and Amanda Westfall. His father engaged in preaching in Iowa City when it was the capital of the territory of Iowa. He was a member of the Universalist church and took an active part in promoting that doctrine in the middle west in pioneer times. He afterward became a physician and continued actively in the practice of medicine for twenty-five years. In 1861 he had removed to Rochester, Minnesota, where he resided until 1880, when the family came to South Dakota and Dr. Westfall secured a homestead. He was a most dignified, courteous and kindly gentleman, well worthy the honor and high regard which were everywhere accorded him. Murray W. Westfall came with the family to South Dakota and he, too, secured a homestead, which he located on section 24, Oxford Township, Hamlin County, while his father's claim was in Codington county. Dr. Westfall in addition to directing the development of his place also engaged in the practice of medicine in Watertown, and there passed away in 1889, while his wife died in the year 1888. Dr. Westfall was a man of prominence in the different communities in which he lived and was made a delegate to the constitutional convention of South Dakota, which met at Sioux Falls. His ability as a medical practitioner and his influence on the side of moral progress also made him a factor in the upbuilding of his city and state. Murray W. Westfall was educated in the public schools but because of delicate health his opportunities in that direction were somewhat limited. He was twenty-one years of age when he began farming on his own account in Minnesota, where he followed that occupation for about fifteen years, and then came to South Dakota, as previously stated, in 1880. In addition to securing a homestead he also obtained a tree claim and bent every energy toward bringing the land under cultivation and transforming it into richly productive fields. He remained upon the farm for seven years but about 1887 removed to Watertown. He now owns and rents his father's old homestead and through the careful and economical management of his business interests, his close application and his industry has won a substantial measure of success. On the 21st of December, 1867, Mr. Westfall was united in marriage to Miss Adele Clough, a daughter of Charles and Adaline Clough, both of whom have passed away. Mr. and Mrs. Westfall have no children of their own, but adopted a boy, Claude C., now thirty- five years of age, upon whom they have bestowed every care and attention. He is now in Krem, North Dakota. Mr. Westfall holds membership with the Elks. He gives his political allegiance to the republican party, which he has supported since age conferred upon him the right of franchise. For one term he served as a member of the city council of Watertown and in 1898 he was elected county commissioner, which position he has since filled through reelection for sixteen consecutive years, having the honor of being the oldest member of the county board in years of continuous service. He likewise held township offices in Hamlin County and for three years was a member of the school board of Watertown. He is deeply interested in the upbuilding of his city and is enthusiastic in his advocacy of South Dakota. In Watertown and throughout Codington County he is widely known, and both he and his wife have a large circle of warm friends. He was Killed at Harpers Ferry, Virginia on the raid with John Brown. ---------------------- Note: I found this information on the internet about John and Anna (Westfall) Anderson's son Jeremiah Goldsmith Anderson who was killed with John Brown at Harper's Ferry at this website- http://www3.iath.virginia.edu/jbrown/men.html Jeremiah Goldsmith Anderson, one of Brown's lieutenants, was born April 17, 1833, in Indiana, and was therefore in his twenty-seventh year when killed at Harper's Ferry. He was the son of John Anderson, and was the grandson of slaveholders; his maternal grandfather, Colonel Jacob Westfall, of Tygert Valley, Virginia, was a soldier in the Revolutionary War and a slaveholder. Anderson went to school at Galesburg, Illinois, and Kossuth, Iowa; he worked as a peddler, farmer, and employee of a saw-mill, before emigrating to Kansas in August, 1857, where he settled on the Little Osage, Bourbon County, a mile from Fort Bain. He was twice arrested by pro- slaveryites, and for ten weeks imprisoned at Fort Scott; he then became a lieutenant of Captain Montgomery, and was with him in the attack on Captain Anderson's troop of the First U. S. Cavalry. He also witnessed the murder on his own doorstep of a Mr. Denton by Border Ruffians. He was with John Brown on the slave raid into Missouri, and thereafter followed Brown's fortunes. Writing July 5, 1859, of his determination to continue to fight for freedom, he said:" Millions of fellow-beings require it of us; their cries for help go out to the universe daily and hourly. Whose duty is it to help them? Is it yours? Is it mine? It is every man's, but how few there are to help. But there are a few who dare to answer this call and dare to answer it in a manner that will make this land of liberty and equality shake to the centre." Anderson was killed at Harper's Ferry by a bayonet-thrust of one of the marines. "One of the prisoners described Anderson as turning completely over against the wall [to which he was pinned by the bayonet] in his dying agony. he lived a short time, stretched on the brick walk without, where he was subjected to savage brutalities, being kicked in body and face, while one brute of an armed farmer spat a huge quid of tobacco from his vile jaws into the mouth of the dying man, which he first forced open." --------------------- Note: I found the following information about the Harper's Ferry John Brown's Raid in which Jeramiah Anderson was killed on the internet at this website- http://www.laughtergenealogy.com/bin/histprof/misc/harpersferry.html Harper's Ferry John Brown's Raid -- Oct. 16, 1859 John Brown saw himself as a God-sent liberator to wipe out slavery in the American South. Following his raid in Kansas in 1856, he had been devising a plan to purify the entire South through an armed slave rebellion that he would lead. Brown believed that "without shedding of blood there is no remission of sins" Also, with all of the recent victories for southern slave-holders (Kansas-Nebraska Act, Dred Scott decision, etc.), Brown thought that "violent counterstroke was the only answer" . Brown persuaded many abolitionists to support his ideas, and attempted to recruit Frederick Douglas into his effort. Douglass, the night before Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry, failed in an attempt to persuade Brown not to go forward with the plan to capture the Federal arsenal at Harper's Ferry, Virginia (now West Virginia), seize all the weapons there, and arm thousands of slaves who were to join him. Brown recruited 17 white and five black men to comprise his "army." On Oct. 16, 1859, Brown and his men captured the unguarded arsenal, but then seemed to have no alternate plan for the next step. He waited for the legions of slaves to join him, but because he had sent out little word to them, only a handful actually showed up. News of the arsenal's capture spread rapidly, and during the night of Oct. 17-18, Brown's men were surrounded by marines commanded by Robert E. Lee and J.E.B. Stuart. Brown refused to surrender, and the marines stormed the building resulting in a battle leaving three locals, two of Brown's sons, and twelve others dead. Brown was sentenced to death and his attempt to start a rebellion had failed. However, Brown did not fail to provoke a violent uprising. His raid was one of many causes leading directly to the Civil War. It was the first nationally publicized uprising and after his execution, those who believed him a saint now saw him as a martyr. His death provided impetus for abolitionists in the North to rally and gain strength. Merril and published 1897 in Mediapolis, IA we find the following items: pg 27 ".....They (the Blairs) found a cabin at Yellow Spring, occupied by Jacob Westfall and Allen Eliot, a brother of Mrs. Westfall. These claimants had come in the winter of 1834, and the Westfall cabin was the first habitation built in the township. ....... In this cabin, a few months later, Jacob Westfall jr first saw the light of day and set up his claim, which has never been disputed, as being the first white child born in Yellow Springs township." pg 31 " Josiah Edwards married Pamelia Westfall in the spring of 1836. This was the first wedding in Yellow Spring Township. " and "In the spring of 1836, Reuben Westfall, the father of Jacob came, with his children and relatives - an extensive connection when they all got in. They were the Andersons, Kings, Proctors, Swanks, Rouses, Holts, Gobens and Barnes, who settled near Yellow Spring, on the south side of Round Prairie, and on the Bottom." pg 49 "THE WESTFALL FAMILY. It has been a difficult matter to obtain any sketch of this family of early settlers. Jacob was one of the first claim makers and built the first cabin in the township, as otherwhere recorded. He appears to have been a man given to hospitality, and his cabin was a home and a preaching place for the itinerant for many years. His father, Reuben Westfall, and other sons came in later, settling in the Yellow Spring neighborhood and on the Bottom. They are all gone now. One son, Jacob Jr. the first white child born in the township, was here a few years ago, but he is now in the west. -------------------- Reuben and Elizabeth (Tucker) Westfall had 11 children-Elizabeth Westfall, Jacob Westfall, Levi Westfall, Cornelius Westfall, Nathan Westfall, Parmelia J. Merrill and published in Mediapolis, Ia in 1897. pg 57 JOSHUA SWANK was born in Kentucky in 1798. His parents moved to Indiana when he was but a boy. He married Elizabeth Westfall in Indiana in 1825. Ten years later, in 1835 he came to Iowa and settled on a claim north of the one afterwards taken by his brother Wesley. He was the first settler in that part of Huron township. Of the family there lives but one in this part of the country, Brinton Swank, whose home is north of the Mills farm on the Bottom road. Mr. Swank lived on the old place till his family were all gone from home. He died in Kansas some years ago, but his remains were brought back here for burial. At an early day a postoffice was established at his home and he was probably the first postmaster in the township. This was the original Hawkeye postoffice, from which the school in the neighborhood took its name.

In PROTRAIT AND BIOGRAPHICAL ALBUM, LOUISA COUNTY, IOWA 1889 F627 28 page 8: G.W. Westfall, a farmer residing on section 7, Oakland Township, was born in Boone Counlty, Ind., in 1831, and was the second in a family of nine children born to Jacob and Caroline (Elliott) Westfall. His father was a native of Kentucky, while his mother was born in York State, and when a young man Jacob Westfall removed to Indiana, where he was married and there followed farming for several years. In 1834 he followed the course of Western emigration, settling in Des Moines County, Iowa, entering a claim in Yellow Springs Township, which he later purchased at the Burlington land sales. He also resided in Washington and Henry Counties, and in 1862 came to Louisa County, locating in Oakland Township, where he remained some years, when he went to Kansas, but after a short time returned to Louisa County, and made his home with our subject until his death, which occurred June 20, 1874. His wife survived him for about two years, dying Nov. 29, 1876. Our subject grew to manhood upon a farm, and received his education in the district schools of the state. He was among the first to respond to his country's call for troops, enlisting in September 1861 as First Sergeant of Company D, 4th Iowa Cavalry, and was mustered into service at Camp Harlan in Mt. Pleasant. He participated in the battle of Vicksburg, and was engaged in scouting expeditions and skirmishes in the Southern and Southwestern States. In the battle of Oakland, Miss., he was wounded by gunshot, and on the 4th of November 1864, was honorably discharged at Davenport, Iowa. After the cessation of hostilities, he returned to Louisa County, where, during his term of service, he had purchased a farm of 230 acres. He has since disposed of a part of that tract, and now has remaining about sixty acres of fine, arable land, which is highly cultivated and improved. On the 2d of September, 1869, in Louisa County, Mr. Westfall led to the marriage alter Miss Alice M. Blake, daughter of Joseph and Ester (Hungerford) Blake, the father a native of Greenbrier County, W.Va., the mother of New York. Accompanied by his family, the father came to Louisa County in 1838, settling in Oakland Township. He had then been twice married, and in 1851 wedded Esther Hungerford, who came to the county in 1845. They setled on section 7, Oakland Township, he buying the land at the Burlington land sales, and there resided until his death, Dec 14, 1883, aged eighty years. Mrs. Blake is still living, and resides in Barber County, Kan. By the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Westfall two children were born; Lottie I., wife of E. Garard, who lives on the old homestead; and Gertie, who died March 4, 1881, at the age of four years. Mr. Westfall is an active worker for the interests of the Republican party, and an ardent supporter of its principles. He has held several local offices of trust, in which he discharged his duties faithfully and well. His home is pleasantly situated about two miles from Columbus Junction, between the forks of the rivers, where the land is very productive. He is a systematic and progressive farmer, and as a citizen ranks high in the community. -------------------- (2a) Jacob and Caroline (Elliott) Westfall's son Reuben D. Westfall Biography (1911) - History of Louisa County, Iowa, From Its Earliest Settlement to 1911 - William Westfall, who is engaged in farming in Elliott (sic: Eliot) township, is a native of Louisa county, his birth having here occurred October 18, 1867. He is a son of Reuben and Jane (Racer) Westfall, the mother a native of Virginia. The father passed away in 1870 but the mother still survives and makes her home in Oakville. Of the five children born unto Mr. and Mrs. Westfall two are deceased: Albert, who was the third in order of birth; and Thomas, who was the youngest member of the family. Those surviving are as follows: Jacob, the eldest, who is a resident of Louisa county; Lettie, the wife of John Haight, also of this county; and William, who is the fourth in order of birth. Born and reared on a farm William Westfall has always lived in the country and obtained his education in the district schools. As is the case with the majority of farmer lads he was early assigned duties and responsibilities about the homestead which were increased as his strength developed. After laying aside his text-books he gave his entire attention to assisting his widowed mother in the operation of the farm until his marriage. Immediately thereafter he purchased twenty acres of land south of Oakville upon which he located, continuing its cultivation for five years thereafter. At the expiration of that period he disposed of that place and bought forty acres in Elliott township, whereon he resided for eighteen months. He then sold it and bought his present farm which contains ninety-five and a half acres. During the period of his occupancy he has wrought many improvements upon his place and now owns one of the valuable and attractive properties of the township. Although engaged in general farming Mr. Westfall makes a specialty of the raising and feeding of hogs, which venture has proven to be very profitable. Mr. Westfall married Miss Bazzie Dotson, a daughter of David and Lydia (Bier) Dotson. Her father is deceased but the mother is surviving and makes her home in Newport, this county. The union of Mr. and Mrs. Westfall has been blessed with a son and daughter: Louva Oleda, now attending high school; and Virgil Eldon. Mr. Westfall holds membership in the Odd Fellows lodge of Oakville, and both he and his wife are affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal church. In politics he has ever remained true to the principles of democracy, the policy of which party he deems best adapted to subserve the interests of the majority. He has never been an office seeker, however, always having felt that his own best interests required his undivided attention in the direction and supervision of his business. WESTFALL THIS AFTERNOON - Daniel Sylvester Westfall, 79, a resident of the Roy Community since 1926,died Wednesday morning, Nov. 5, at 5 a.m. at his home in the north part of town. The cause of death was a kidney and heart ailment. Mr. Westfall was born near Plattsburg, Mo., the eldest of William and Eliza Westfall. His father, a conductor on the Rock Island railway, operating between St. Louis and Springfield, Mo., was slain by the Jesse James gang during one of their holdups and robberies. Attack on the passenger train was made just as it left Winston, Mo. As the James boys entered the rear end of the train and commanded all to raise their hands, Grandpa Westfall had just started to drop tickets into his pocket, the move being interpreid by the James gang as a move to reach for a gun, they fired and he was instantly killed. Looting the train, the robbers collected many pieces of jewelry from the passengers and crew, but they failed to take a 17-jewel Elgin watch, which had been possession of the late Mr. Westfall since 1881. Three weeks ago the time piece was presented to the oldest son W.L.(Bill) Westfall, who regards it highly as a family heirloom. Mr. Westfall and his mother, along with a brother Louis and a sister Willie Westfall moved to Nebraska where Daniel in latter years met and married Miss Rozillia Burger. At opening of the Cherokee Strip in Oklahoma, Mr. Westfall and a brother made the run and staked homesteads near the present town of Carmen, where the Westfalls resided for 30 years. They also saw the building of three railroads into their town. In 1920 Mr. Westfall bought a section of land near Farley and in 1926 he acquired the Dr. Ames farm two miles east of Roy where he made his home until 1942 when he was stricken the aliment that caused his death.
